Veteran Preference Position:
Dual Certified Firefighter/Paramedic Summary:
Responsible, technical work in the Department of Public Safety, protecting life and property by performing advanced life support (ALS) services in a progressive, rural, county EMS system, maintaining all aspects and functions of a Florida Firefighter II and Florida Paramedic, including, but not limited to providing, fire suppression services, advanced life support (ALS), and handling emergency calls in a timely, professional manner. Work is performed within standard operating guidelines. The employee is expected to exercise independent judgment based upon training. Work is performed under the supervision of a Battalion Captain, Battalion Lieutenant, Fire Rescue Lieutenant, and/or designee and is reviewed through observation.
Responsibilities:
The following describe the principal functions of this position and scope of responsibility, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work functions. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas; Responds to emergency calls relayed by dispatchers, reading maps to use the most expeditious route while observing traffic laws. Drives and/or operates emergency vehicles as necessary as well as maintaining operational readiness of assigned vehicle(s). Evaluates scenes on arrival; determining hazards and establishing priorities; determines nature and extent of illness or injury; renders/performs emergency medical care up to certification level. Uses medical equipment following protocol(s). Performs station housekeeping and routine office work as required. Assists in lifting, carrying, and transporting patient(s) to ambulance and on to a medical facility. Prepares, decontaminates, inspects, inventories, repairs, and/or maintains medical and fire equipment and supplies, first aid materials, and vehicles for safe operation; tests all equipment on a regular basis and checks for readiness. Communicates effectively and coherently over two-way radio channels. Attends meetings and in-service training as required to remain knowledgeable of departmental operations, to promote improved job performance, and to stay current with changing techniques, state/local policies, procedures, codes, and laws as related to the position. Assists with community events such as offering free blood pressure readings, educating the public on the 911 emergency system, medical emergency and firefighting procedures, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Performs duties related to fire suppression and prevention including; rescue, entry, ventilating, and salvage work. Performs duties on motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) including; emergency medical care and extrication. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of fire suppression equipment, operation, and maintenance. Knowledge of emergency medical equipment, operation, and maintenance. Knowledge of advanced life support emergency medical treatment. Knowledge of defensive driving techniques and methods and ability to execute such methods quickly. Knowledge of Levy County's street systems and geography. Knowledge of Department Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs), Protocols, and Rules & Regulations. Ability to rapidly determine locations by quadrant addressing. Ability to react quickly in emergency situations. Ability to receive, follow and execute orders from a supervisor. Ability to follow precise technical instructions in an emergency situation. Ability to perform prolonged and difficult work under adverse conditions. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with the general public, coworkers, elected and appointed officials and members. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
Qualifications:
Upon submission of application, proof of the following must be provided: High school graduate or equivalent. Employer conducts background check, drug screening, and motor vehicle record check. Maintain a valid Florida Driver's License free from convictions of reckless or careless driving or driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances for a period of not less than three (3) years preceding employment Maintain a valid State of Florida Paramedic License with at least six (6) months of fulltime equivalent service as a cleared Paramedic with a career 9-1-1 advanced life support EMS transport agency Maintain a valid State of Florida Bureau of Fire Standards Certificate of Compliance Maintain a valid American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Provider certificate Maintain a valid American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Certificate Maintain a valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certificate 16-hour Emergency Vehicle Operations Certificate (EVOC) FEMA Incident Command (ICS) 100, 200, 700, and 800 certificates Clearance from the Levy County Medical Director is required and must be maintained CJIS clearance must be maintained throughout employment (Depending on functional area of assignment, additional licensure, certification, or training will apply to meet and maintain compliance with all Federal, State, and local licensure requirements, as well as established regulatory standards governing the work.)
Work Environment:
Work is performed inside and outside, with occasional exposure to outside elements and potentially hazardous situations when performing assignments. Workspace is shared with other employees. Work hours typically align with a 24-hour shift schedule though an alternate assignment could be assigned. The noise level is mostly moderate. Telephone activity, conversations, and interruptions are to be expected. When on emergency scenes, the work environment will vary dependent on the circumstances of emergency. When performing emergency medical service and/or rescue operations, tasks are performed with potential for intermittent exposure to occupational health hazards including, but not limited to, extreme temperatures, wetness, humidity, inclement weather, loud noise, toxic/chemical agents, electrical currents, pathogens, fumes, gases, odors, erratic or unpredictable human behavior, weapons, and explosives. Tasks include working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, carts, and materials handling, where extremely heightened awareness to surroundings and environment is essential in the preservation of life and property.
