Job Summary:
Performs basic support initially on his/her own at the scene of an emergency. Performs advanced life support functions under the direction of a licensed physician. Works as a member of a team in search and rescue operations at the scene of a fire. Works as a member of a combat team in the prevention of fire damage and protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing and preventing fires. (Annual Hours = 2,496) Process For consideration, candidates must be: a Certified State of Florida Firefighter II a State of Florida Certified Paramedic
- or EMT must have both certifications (Firefighter and Paramedic or EMT) prior to date of hire (State of Florida Paramedic currently enrolled in an approved Fire Academy may be considered for a Firefighter/Paramedic position as outlined below) In the event that we are unable to fill these positions with other State of Florida Firefighter/Paramedic candidates, State of Florida Firefighter II candidates currently in an approved State of Florida Paramedic program can be considered.
The tentative starting date for this process is October 2026. The City of Largo Fire Department is accepting applications for State of Florida Certified Firefighters that are State of Florida and Pinellas County Certification (or Provisional) EMTs or Paramedics residing in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee and Pasco Counties. In the event we are unable to secure applicants as State of Florida Certified Firefighters with State of Florida and Pinellas County Certification (or Provisional) EMTs or Paramedic's not residing in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee and Pasco Counties, we are then able to consider other State of Florida Firefighter EMTs or Paramedic candidates. In the event we are unable to secure applicants with State of Florida Firefighter EMTs or Paramedic, we are then able to consider State of Florida EMTs or Paramedics currently enrolled in an approved Fire Academy program. EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS
As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) required College and related work experience preferred Possession of a valid Class E Florida Driver's License required Have and maintain a Florida State Paramedic Certificate Possess a valid Firefighter certification issued through the State of Florida Obtain a Pinellas County Paramedic certification within one year from the date of employment Successful completion of psychological examination required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to learn, after a period of education and training, a wide variety of firefighting duties and methods Ability to learn, after a period of training, the inspection and operation of firefighting apparatus, equipment and tools Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions Ability to readily acquire a knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the City Ability to successfully complete basic course of fire training prescribed Some mechanical aptitude required
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment:
50% inside a climate controlled building; 50% outside which may include driving.
Physical Requirements:
The essential functions of the job require: the ability to sit, stand or walk for undetermined periods of time.
The work requires frequent:
bending/stooping, climbing, fine manipulations, grasping, pulling, pushing, reaching, lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 75 pounds, with crawling, kneeling, repetitive motion, and lifting/carrying of objects weighing 75 pounds and over. All employees must meet the

medical/physical standards. Must be tobacco/smoke free for a minimum of one (1) year prior to hire and thereafter. Must have no body ornaments (tattoos/body piercings) visible while wearing department assigned uniforms.
