FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC JOB SUMMARY
The Firefighter/Paramedic is responsible for performing skilled technical work in the County Public Safety department in the field of fire suppression, prevention and emergency medical services. Work is performed under the general direction of a superior officer.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs all duties in the Firefighter/EMT job description.
  • Responds with necessary equipment to requests for medical assistance, where life is endangered by illness or injury.
  • Administers basic and advanced life support at the scene of an emergency.
  • Transports victims to the closest appropriate medical facility according to protocol, unless turned over to a licensed transport agency with equal or higher medical authority.
  • Maintains basic and advanced life support apparatus and equipment.
  • Writes reports on patients' conditions and treatments administered; inputs these reports onto the county report writing system; and documents NIFRS reports into the county report writing system.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent; and two (2) years of experience as a Paramedic; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Special Qualifications:
Must meet physical requirements as indicated for State certification.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the positions of firefighter and driver engineer and the skills to perform the duties of each.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the County with respect to streets, hydrants and building access information.
  • Knowledge of the location and layout of all high risk and special hazard occupancies, and the problems encountered with each.
  • Knowledge of the strategy and tactics of handling fire, rescue and medical emergencies and the ability to analyze and respond effectively under stress to each.
  • Knowledge of the record keeping system in use, the components of the system, and the functions of each.
  • Knowledge of paramedic principles, practices and techniques and how they are used in rescue operations.
  • Ability to carry out orders and to see that department and County policies are adhered to.
  • Ability to perform Firefighter and ALS duties effectively.
  • Ability to work rotating shift assignment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, and walking. Mental acuity is required for making rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes. Visual ability is required to operate heavy equipment and perform activities specific to the job, such as viewing a computer terminal, observation of facilities or structures, and/or inspection involving small parts or operations of machines.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily performed in an environmentally controlled environment without exposure to harmful chemicals, personal danger, or other workplace hazards; however, a portion of time can be performed in an outside environment in a variety of weather conditions. The employee is exposed to stressful situations, flames, fire, chemicals, smoke, heat, gases, moving vehicles, falling structures and debris, electricity, poor ventilation, poor lighting and related hazardous situations. Must endure sustained acts of physical exhaustion and endure periods of duty under unfavorable and life-threatening situations. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
  • All applicants must have the following current certifications attached with application:
  • State of Florida Certified Paramedic.
  • State of Florida Firefighter II Certificate.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support Card (CPR card).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS Card).
  • Valid Florida Class "E" driver's license.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operators 16 - hour Course Certificate (EVOC).
  • High School Diploma or GED.
Possession of PALS, ACLS, EVOC, and
ICS 100, 200, 700, 800.
Salary Range $48,388.56 to $66,704.16 (Base salary range not including FLSA Overtime and Holiday compensation)
