QUALIFICATIONS 18
years or older at the time of employment Valid Michigan drivers license High school diploma or GED Completion of the Michigan Fire Fighter Training Council FFII, Hazardous Materials Operations, Michigan Department of Public Health Advanced Paramedic license and current ACLS certification Must pass a criminal background investigation Must pass a pre-hire physical with drug screening
CPAT, OCC
agility test, or ATFD equivalent agility test (waived if currently working on a fire department)
CHAIN OF COMMAND
Works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, and other command officers. May assist to coordinate, instruct, or supervise the work of other department personnel as assigned. In the capacity of fire fighter, the individual will assume the authority and responsibility of command. At incident scenes, the individual will work under the supervision of the highest ranking command officer. In the absence of a command officer, the individual will work in conjunction with other fire fighters, or will assume command as the most senior fire fighter.
JOB EXPECTATIONS
Performs fire fighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks. Performs emergency aid activities including administering first aid, starting IV's, administering drugs and other advanced life support procedures as permitted by the Medical Control Authority and provide other medical/rescue assistance. Participates in training, attends classes in fire fighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects. Receives and relays fire calls and alarms. Operates radio and other communication equipment. Participates in the inspection of building, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment, cleans and washes walls and floors, cares for grounds around station, makes minor repairs, washes, hangs and dries hose, washes, cleans, polishes, maintain and test apparatus and equipment. Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous materials, communications, training programs, fire fighting, and emergency aid activities. Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris. Plans, carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules and inspections for all vehicles and equipment, either personally, through paid-on-call personnel, or outside contractors. Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air driven tools. Evaluates status of equipment and vehicles and performs or schedules required inspections, service, testing and repairs. Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of all vehicles and equipment. Ability to act effectively in stressful emergency situations. Any other task or duty as may be assigned from time to time.
COLLATERAL DUTIES
Assists in department supervisory and administrative activities as assigned. Assists in training new employees as assigned. Serves as a member of various employee committees. Other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch; or crawl, run, talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold, or smoke.
