Job Description

The City of Robbinsdale is looking for our next Firefighter! Join our Paid On-Call firefighting team and help keep our city safe. We will be holding a couple of drill nights open to those individuals who are interested in seeing what the fire department is all about and ask all the questions they can think of. The 2 drill nights will be: Monday, April 6 th Monday, April 13 th 7:30pm - 9:00pm To attend the drill nights, please contact RFD ahead of time at 763-233-5650, option 4 for location.

Position Objective:
Performs skilled firefighting duties by responding to fire alarms and other emergency calls; to protect life and property from fire; to extinguish fires; and to participate in life saving rescue operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Fire Suppression Responds to fire emergencies on apparatus to assist in the suppression of fires within properties, vehicles or in wild land areas Rescues persons trapped in burning buildings or from other emergency situations Effectively operates fire apparatus and rescue vehicles to and from the fire ground Connects and handles hose lines and nozzles to hydrants and apparatus, raises or lowers ladders to upper levels of structures and applies water or other extinguishing agents for maximum effect Gains entry into buildings by breaking glass, forcing doors, windows or gates or cutting locks and bars by utilizing power or hydraulic hand tools Ventilates burning structures by breaking windows, cutting holes through floors, roofs or walls and placing ventilation fans appropriately to speed removal of smoke or superheated gases When possible, provides protection to building contents in order to minimize damage from water or smoke Performs salvage and overhaul operations in order to help determine origin of fire Uses ladders, ropes, hand tools, gasoline and hand operated hydraulic power tools, generators, extinguishers, self-contained breathing apparatus, first-aid and/or other equipment in fire and rescue work Emergency Medical And Rescue Response Responds to requests for emergency medical assistance Responds to requests for rescue of trapped or injured persons Administers first-aid including taking vital signs through observation, stopping bleeding, immobilizing fractures, restoring breathing and performing CPR Responds to and assists in stabilizing situations involving leaks and/or spills of flammable/combustible liquids and other hazardous materials Hazardous Materials Response Responds to and assists in stabilizing situations involving leaks and/or spills of flammable/combustible liquids and other hazardous materials Assists in identifying hazardous materials Assists in evacuation of persons within designated areas General Maintains acceptable overall attendance percentages at fire calls, business meetings, drills and work details as outlined by departmental requirements Participates in continuing training programs by individual study of technical materials Participates in inspection of business and commercial buildings for compliance with fire codes and pre-fire planning Assists in conducting fire safety education programs Performs duties for extended periods of time in emergencies Prepares routine records and/or reports as needed Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned or delegated by supervisors Supervisory Duties and Responsibilities May exercise functional supervision of other firefighters in the absence of a line officer. Initiative will be required on the part of the firefighter to accept responsibility for the actions of others when no fire officer is immediately available. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to work with others as a team Ability to follow oral and written instructions and effectively communicate with others Ability to deal with the public Ability to apply proper first-aid techniques to accident victims Ability to perform duties requiring strength, endurance and agility Ability to act calmly under conditions of severe physical, mental and emotional distress Ability to learn technical firefighting techniques and principles Knowledge of construction practices as it applies to fire suppression Ability to apply principles of elementary physics, chemistry, mechanics and hydraulics Ability to recognize fire hazards and be able to determine corrective measures Skill in the use of hand and power tools associated with fire control and rescue techniques Ability to climb ladders and work at considerable heights Education and Experience Must be at least 18 years of age High school diploma or GED Possess valid Class D driver's license with satisfactory driving record Pass required Fire Department physical, medical and drug screen examinations Pass required Fire Department criminal background checks Maintain a full time residence within two and a half (2.5) miles (the most direct route) or be employed on a regular full time basis by an established business within two and a half (2.5) miles (the most direct route) of the Robbinsdale Fire Department Successfully complete the necessary training within the first three (3) years of hire date

NFPA Firefighter I and State Certification NFPA Firefighter II and State Certification NFPA Hazardous Materials 472 and
State Certification Departmental Firefighter Skills Test Year Two:
State of Minnesota First Responder State Certification NFPA Fire Apparatus Operator and State Certification Year Three:
Departmental Emergency Driver's Training Course Physical and Mental Requirements Normal vision is needed with or without correction. Must be able to move about freely on public and private property, including climbing stairs or walking on uneven surfaces. Must be able to bend and move about in tight spaces. Must be able to handle objects and grasp, turn or otherwise use hands. Must be able to lift at all levels at least 100 pounds, or more in some cases. Must be able to perform all physical requirements and job-related tasks. Working Conditions Firefighters work in office and field environments both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions and are likely to work in extreme heat, extreme cold and/or humid environments. May encounter noise and/or vibration exceeding 80 decibels, either constant or intermittent. May encounter a variety of physical hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, working at heights, exposure to burns and radiant energy and exposure to explosive and toxic chemicals and biological agents.
