Job Description

THIS IS AN INTERNAL POSTING. ONLY CURRENT BUREAU OF PROTECTIVE SERVICES
(BPS)
OFFICERS WILL BE CONSIDERED.
Serves as the BPS Training Sergeant. Coordinates all training for all officers of the Bureau of Protective Services. Supervises the BPS Training Unit including planning and implementing all BPS training initiatives and goals as directed by BPS Command staff. Ensures that proper BPS instructor staffing is maintained, and all instructors maintain needed certifications and training. Serves as the BPS Field Training Sergeant, and the Liaison for the Department of Public Safety Training Unit and Criminal Justice Academy (CJA), coordinating all departmental and mandatory training to ensure that all BPS officers receive recertification through the CJA. Coordinates the basic training of new officers and serves as the direct supervisor for new officers while they complete the Criminal Justice Academy. Serves as the supervisor for the
BPS Field Training Coordinator:
Manages the Field Training Officer (FTO) program for all new officers, including coordinating their schedules with supervisors and managing all FTO documents and evaluations. Manages the BPS FTOs and ensures that they are properly trained and certified. Assists the Critical Incident Team (CIT) Leader with initial training and assists as needed with the CIT in order to be prepared for deployment. Grasps training concepts and principles of team movement. Maintains physical training standards. Provides law enforcement and protective functions for areas of the State of South Carolina as determined to be the responsibility of the BPS as mandated by the South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 23-6-90. Conducts protective service duties for the BPS at official meetings, work groups, public functions, hearings, and special task forces as deemed necessary.
State Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
Agency Minimum Requirements :
A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. Basic law enforcement certification and a permanent status as a Bureau of Protective Services Corporal.
Additional Requirements :
Excellent command of BPS and Department of Public Safety (DPS) policies and procedures and knowledgeable of South Carolina Code of Laws. Must also be knowledgeable of the BPS Operations Manual and the BPS Division Operations. Must possess at least a Specific Skills Instructor certification and two Advanced Instructor certifications. Employee must work with minimum supervision and must have the ability to exercise good judgement and discretion when necessary. Must possess effective written and verbal communication skills. Must be physically able to lift, bend and stand for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to restrain individuals who may pose a threat to the Governor and other public officials, state employees, and the general public. This individual must also be able to perform these duties under all weather conditions.
