Under general direction of the Presiding Judge and Area Court Administrator (ACA) the incumbent will serve as a circuit magistrate judge for the First Judicial District communities of Petersburg, Kake, and Wrangell. Travel to other courts in the district may be required. This position serves as a judicial officer presiding over a wide range of proceedings, including misdemeanor and minor offense cases, arraignments, bail hearings, trials, sentencing, felony first appearances, small claims, and protective order hearings. The role includes conducting legal research, issuing both written and oral decisions, and staying current on legal developments to ensure compliance with statutes and court rules. Regular communication with judicial staff, participation in district meetings, and availability for on-call duties—such as handling urgent search warrant requests—are essential. Additional responsibilities include managing warrant records, assisting with court scheduling, and conducting hearings as a standing master, providing recommendations to superior court judges. The Magistrate Judge performs all duties in accordance with applicable state statutes, municipal codes, and court rules, exercising a high degree of independent judgment to determine whether case actions are supported by the facts. This position also performs a wide range of clerical and administrative duties in support of court operations. Responsibilities include maintaining case files and records, preparing and distributing court documents, and managing hearing logs. The role requires operating and troubleshooting office equipment, updating case information in electronic databases, and assisting judicial officers with documentation. Additional duties involve providing customer service to the public, supporting jury processes, and handling financial tasks such as processing payments, maintaining accounts, and reconciling records. The position also includes processing marriage license applications and supporting related services in accordance with established court policies and procedures. This role requires being available on an on-call basis 24/7 during all assigned weeks. Weekend and holiday coverage will be shared on a rotating schedule with other judges. Responsibilities also include helping distribute schedules to relevant law enforcement and other criminal justice agencies. A Magistrate Judge requires knowledge of: Alaska Statutes and Rules of Court Bail schedules Court of Appeals and Supreme Court decisions Local ordinances Formal courtroom procedures Legal research techniques Principles of law and policy management Customer service standards Basic accounting principles MS Office software

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited law school with a JD degree AND active membership in the Alaska Bar Association (ABA).

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Must be a citizen of the United States of America and of the State of Alaska. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must be a resident of Alaska for at least six months immediately preceding appointment as magistrate. Additional Required Information This applies to your application submission.
