POSITION OBJECTIVE
The City of Fridley is seeking a detail-oriented and civic-minded Election Assistant to support the City Clerk's Office in administering local elections. This part-time position plays a vital role in ensuring fair, accurate, and accessible elections for Fridley residents. The Election Assistant will serve as a key resource for voters, coordinate election logistics, and help maintain the integrity of the democratic proces
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Serve as a knowledgeable point of contact for the public on voter registration and election-related questions, providing accurate and friendly assistance both in person and by phone. Assist in voting people, access State Voter Registration System to verify voter's information and eligibility to register or vote. Maintain current knowledge of Minnesota election laws, City ordinances, and evolving election processes to ensure compliance and provide accurate guidance. Assist in the overall administration of City-run elections, including supporting the absentee voting process from start to finish. Maintain and update election judge data; assist with the recruitment, training, scheduling, and assignment of election judges for each election cycle. Update training materials and resources as needed to reflect current laws and procedures. Coordinate polling place logistics, including preparation of precinct supply kits and ensuring equipment is ready for election day. Test and prepare election equipment prior to each election to ensure proper function. Provide backup support to the City Clerk's Office by delivering excellent customer service both in person and over the phone. Troubleshoot technical difficulties with elections equipment following provided guides.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Update state voter records as required. Handle confidential data. Lead, manage, supervise, and provide work direction to all Election Judges assigned to polling place
QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a municipal government, elections, or public-facing administrative role. Working knowledge of Minnesota election law and voter registration processes. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with standard office software and the ability to learn election management systems. Commitment to accuracy, confidentiality, and nonpartisan election administration. Ability to work flexible hours during election periods, including evenings and weekends as needed.
Unqualified Persons:
A candidate who is on the ballot in that precinct. The spouse, parent, stepparent, child, stepchild, sibling, or stepsibling of any candidate on the ballot in the same precinct. The spouse, parent, child, or sibling of an Election Judge serving in the same precinct. Anyone who signed or circulated a Nomination Petition for a candidate. Any member of a committee petitioning for a referendum or recall on the ballot.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with people from all cultures and backgrounds. Ability to handle, discern and maintain confidentiality as required by State law. Knowledge of rules, regulations, and codes related to elections. Ability to work under pressure and/or with frequent interruptions. Ability to handle high-stress situations and remain calm under pressure. Ability to tactfully address issues with difficult or angry people and determine when to request assistance from City staff. Ability to work well with the public and effectively deal with angry or disgruntled voters.
