The Criminal Justice Section is seeking a First Assistant Attorney General in protecting the public and supporting complex financial investigations related to securities fraud and insurance fraud. This position offers an opportunity to provide strategic leadership and mentorship to a team of dedicated attorneys while leading the unit in prosecuting insurance and securities fraud throughout the state.

Description of Job:
The Financial Fraud Unit is a criminal prosecution unit that is statutorily authorized to seek out and prosecute securities and insurance fraud. The First Assistant Attorney General is responsible for leading a team of attorneys, criminal investigators, and paralegals who are dedicated exclusively to the investigation and prosecution of fraud. The First will promote collaboration, engagement, integrity, and exceptional legal service. The First is expected to handle a caseload of complex or high-profile cases, supervise staff, and serve as a frontline leader. Specifically, the First is responsible for employee performance management activities and assisting the Deputy Attorney General of Criminal Justice with personnel, budget, and various administrative duties affecting the work of the Unit and the Department of Law.
What you will do:
The First Assistant Attorney General is one of the most important roles in our office. In this role, you will guide the Unit in delivering high-quality, cost-effective legal and prosecution services to the citizens of Colorado, as well as supervise employees while also carrying an independent workload. Managing this team involves coordinating and supervising litigation of major cases; hiring staff and attorneys, conducting regular performance meetings and evaluations, handling discipline and HR issues; maintaining and developing good relationships with outside law enforcement and stakeholders; coordinating workflow; and drafting reports for the Department of Law. The First facilitates the work and operations of the Unit, promoting collaboration, engagement, integrity, and exceptional legal service, as well as assigning and overseeing cases. In addition, the First has management responsibilities that include making hiring and salary recommendations; coaching and evaluating the attorneys and paralegals; and reporting to senior management on legal, operational, and personnel matters. The First leads the Unit in monitoring policy, legislative and legal developments related to financial fraud matters and ensures the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective and efficient legal work while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism. This announcement may be used to fill multiple attorney positions within the Criminal Justice section at the Department of Law.
Salary Note:
The Department of Law uses a wage progression compensation model. Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. Salary will be paid on a biweekly basis.

Applicants for the First Assistant Attorney General position must meet the following criteria: Admitted to the Colorado bar or clearly eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar and be in good standing at the time of application. Candidates eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar will be required to submit proof of their completed application before the first day of employment Outstanding writing and analytical skills Our ideal candidates will have practiced law for a minimum of seven years, and demonstrate progressively more challenging legal experience, including team, project, or case management responsibilities and the resolution of complex legal issues. Desired qualifications also include substantial experience litigating complex criminal matters.
Conditions of Employment:
Applicants must pass a thorough background investigation prior to appointment. Colorado Department of Law participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S. The Financial Fraud Unit offers flexible work arrangements. First Assistant Attorneys General are encouraged to work in the office at least 2 or 3 days per week, however alternative in-person and remote work arrangements will be considered.
