JOB OVERVIEW
RESTRICTED POSTING
: to be eligible for this position, you MUST BE a current Law School Student going into your second year Fall of 2026•This position is for a term length of 1 year or less. Please submit 5 pages or less of a writing sample with a resume. Under the general supervision of the Public Defender or designee, the incumbent accurately performs a variety of skilled clerical and research duties requiring moderate independent judgment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Research, collect, and analyze laws, judicial decisions, legal articles and other relevant materials to assist in case preparation. Assist with writing legal memoranda, drafts, opinions, and orders in all types of court matters. Assist attorney in preparation for court, civil, and legal proceedings. May conduct arraignments, hearings, trials, and the like, or parts thereof under the direct supervision of a deputy public defender with proper law student certification. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, law enforcement, judges, attorneys, other agencies, employees and supervisors. Maintain and protect confidential and sensitive information. Report to work with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance. Peripheral Duties Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience Bachelor's degree required. Current student at an accredited law school. Two years of related experience preferred. Previous intern experience with a Public Defender's Office Preferred. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Working knowledge of the legal system Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office software (e.g. WordPerfect, Excel, Word, etc.). Working knowledge of on-line legal research services Working knowledge of office practices and procedures Considerable research and investigative skills Effective planning and organizational skills Well-developed communication skills Well-developed writing skills Ability to interact with diverse client base, including, but not limited to one-on-one meetings Ability to carry out assigned projects to completion Ability to understand and follow instructions Ability to work under pressure and/or frequent interruptions Ability to prioritize work duties Ability to communicate effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing Ability to operate standard office equipment including, but not limited to, multi-line telephone, computer, typewriter, printer, scanner, copier, and fax
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance, and an ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk (verbal exchange) and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must be able to exert sustained concentration for several hours at a time. Work is performed in an office setting during day-shift hours, however hours may occasionally include evening, weekend, holidays, and call-ins. Work may be fast-paced when dealing with multiple priorities and time constraints as well as interruptions. The noise level is typically moderate.
