Job Description

As a condition of employment all employees must pass a post offer criminal history background check, physical examination and drug screen. All employees must also submit proof of identity and employment eligibility.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Responsible for providing legal representation, counseling, and defense of the Sheriff's Office and the Unified Government's interests. Responsibilities will include primarily the following duties for the Sheriff, Sheriff's Office personnel, and the jail administrator: legal representation regarding labor and employment matters, general advice and consultation regarding detention and law enforcement issues; representation in civil litigation and administrative actions; regular attendance at staff meetings; policy review, drafting and associated training; legal training for new recruits and annual updates for other personnel; drafting, negotiation, and review of contracts and other documents; and other duties as assigned. Additional duties include providing legal representation to other Unified Government departments, municipal court prosecution and appeals to district court, rendering legal opinions, performing legal research, and drafting local legislation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Juris Doctorate degree in Law and three years of civil litigation, prosecutorial, or corrections experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position. Must have strong legal writing skills. Knowledge of constitutional law as it applies to jails and law enforcement and civil rights litigation experience is preferred. License to practice law in the State of Kansas and the United States District Court for the District of Kansas is required.
Salary Range:
