Chandler Police Department 2026 Police Sergeant Promotional Process- Only sworn Chandler Police Officer employees are eligible to apply.
- The City of Chandler Police Department is currently seeking qualified individuals to create an eligibility list for the full-time position of Police Sergeant.
Classification Summary:
This position is responsible for supervisory and administrative work as first-line supervisor of a group of sworn police officers and/or civilian employees who are assigned to uniform patrol, criminal investigations, crime prevention or other related duties; or may be assigned to a staff position not requiring immediate supervisory responsibility. An employee in this classification is expected to perform the same work as a Police Officer when required. Some job duties will include planning, coordinating, scheduling, training, and supervising the work of both police officers and civilian employees. Knowledge of State statutes and City ordinances, particularly of the laws of arrest and evidence and of the principles of accident investigation and interview techniques is required. This position requires good judgment, leadership, the ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to be able to communicate clearly and objectively both orally and in writing. This position must maintain acceptable departmental physical standards and maintain t he ability to use firearms and related police emergency equipment. Applicants must also have a working knowledge of police practices and methods, including supervisory methods; and geography of the City of Chandler.Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalency, with an associate's degree or 60 college credits. A copy of your transcripts or degree must be attached to the application; and
- Endorsement letter from your current supervisor or most recent supervisor if recently changed. This letter should include witnessed evidence of mentorship, informal leadership, qualities demonstrating competencies for the Sergeant position, and qualifications. A copy of the letter (memo format) must be attached to the application; and
- Attend the pre-requisite courses offered on January 22-23 or January 29-30, or May 14-15; and
- At least four (4) years of experience at the rank of Police Officer with the Chandler Police Department, OR one (1) year experience as a Chandler Police Officer and at least three (3) years' experience as a Police Officer with another agency; and
- AZPOST Certification; and
- Valid Arizona Driver's License with acceptable driving record.
Hiring Process:
The 2026 Sergeant process will be as follows (additional dates, times and location information will be forthcoming): 1.Oral Board & Scenario-Based Skills Evaluation:
Candidates will participate in an Oral Board and scenario-based skills evaluation (table-top exercises) the week of June 3-4. Only candidates who have completed the pre-requisite training courses, submitted their endorsement letter, and those who met the minimum qualifications will participate. Candidates who successfully complete the oral board and technical skills evaluation will be considered to move on to the next phase of the process. 2. TDY evaluation period (4-weeks): Recommended personnel from the oral board evaluation will be placed (TDY) into a patrol team for evaluation for four consecutive weeks. The candidate will be evaluated by the patrol team Sergeant. Recommended candidates from the evaluation period will be considered for the next phase of the process. 3.Chief Interview:
The Police Chief will conduct a final interview with candidates who successfully complete the process and are recommended to move forward. The Chief has the right to select any candidate interviewed for promotion, regardless of list order. If any candidate fails the Chief interview, the candidate will be notified and removed from the eligibility list.NOTE:
Candidates must be recommended throughout each phase to be placed on the eligible list. The examination process may vary if determined necessary. The process may vary if determined necessary. This position is a regular, full-time position and is subject to a twelve (12) month probationary period. Per Rule 12.1.C The probation period may be extended one or more times by the Department Director in coordination with the Human Resources Director, but the extended probationary period shall not exceed in total the length of the initial probationary period unless the employee agrees to further extensions. A register of qualified candidates will be active for one (1) year as a result of this process.
