Job Description

Job Summary:
This is a non-exempt law enforcement supervisory work ensuring the protection of life and property and enforcement of law and ordinance by police officers an assigned watch or detectives in the Criminal Investigations Section. Work involves the monitoring of radio communications to ensure preventive patrol and call response operations are conducted in accordance with accepted standards of police operations and departmental policies and that officers have backup assistance available as needed. Work also involves a wide variety of administrative duties making daily work assignments, determining that assigned personnel are available for duty and calling in replacements as authorized, holding daily roll call sessions, and holding training sessions on laws or procedures. At scenes of major crimes or accidents, incumbents assume command until relieved by a ranking officer. Incumbents serve as Assistant Watch Commanders and supervise all activities on a shift.
Major Duties:
Supervises the work of police officers on an assigned watch or detectives in the Criminal Investigations Section; schedules officer duty assignments to ensure minimum staffing and appropriate beat coverage; monitors officers at work to ensure operations are conducted in accordance with departmental policies. Responds to officer's requests for supervisory assistance, and conducts training concerning laws, procedures, etc. (all areas of police operations). Reviews and evaluates employee performance; implements disciplinary action as needed. Conducts daily roll call giving out assignments, memoranda, directives, crime information advisories, etc.; inspects officers and equipment to ensure proper maintenance and serviceability of uniform, weapons, and equipment. Patrols the City to provide a visible deterrent in uniform and in marked cars to enforce laws and ordinances and protect life and property; monitors commercial and residential areas for signs of criminal activity; patrols for suspicious persons or vehicles. Enforces traffic laws through the issuance of traffic citations and warnings; routinely inspects roadways, bridges and traffic signals and signs to find and report any hazardous conditions. Checks building doors, windows, gates, and fences to ensure the same is secured; reports building, vehicles, or equipment that is not secured, ensures the safety and well-being of all employees on duty, learns employees' work patterns and alerts them to possible suspects and crime prevention. Responds to calls for assistance, disturbance calls, and complaints of crime, enforces federal, state, and local laws by performing warrants, felony or misdemeanor, arrests, implements physical confrontation only when necessary, protects the Civil Rights of all persons in custody. Investigates traffic accidents by establishing points of impact, interviewing witnesses and collecting, preserving, and identifying evidence, and briefing supervisors and investigators on their arrival. Serve as first-responder to provide aid and assistance to victims of traffic and other accidents, and assist fire and emergency medical services in treating and transporting victims. Prepares and maintains a wide variety of departmental records and reports in compliance with departmental and legal policies and procedures, prepares and files thorough written case reports, and ensures officer's reports are correctly completed. Maintains assigned uniform, vehicle, and equipment in accordance with departmental policy and procedures. Responds to questions and complaints in a courteous manner. Investigates preliminary reports into complaints regarding officers. Presents evidence and testimony in courts of law, and assists in prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases. Assist stranded motorists, direct traffic when necessary, and transport prisoners to jail. Participates in departmental training programs. Serves and executes criminal and traffic warrants on felony and misdemeanor suspects. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
  • Four (4) years of uninterrupted service within law enforcement.
  • Two (2) years of uninterrupted service with the Riverdale Police Department and an equivalence of four (4) years of combined Police experience.
  • Three (3) of uninterrupted service with the Riverdale Police Department and possess a College Degree in Criminal Justice from an Accredited Institution.
  • Three (3) of uninterrupted service with the Riverdale Police Department and three (3) or more years of Active/Reservist Military Service.
  • Possession of a valid State of Georgia driver's license (Class C) and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
  • Or other qualifications deemed appropriate
Special Requirements Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree from an accredited College or University.
  • Completion of POST (Pease Officer Standards and Training Council) Intermediate certification.
  • Completion of POST Supervision Course or GA Enforcement Professional Management Program.
  • Any equivalent combination of education or experience.
