Police Captain Savannah State University

NOTE :

This position does not offer sponsorship for employment visas. Responsibilities Act as the Chief of Police or Assistant Chief of Police in the absence of Senior Leadership. Responds to any and all emergency situations Ensure that Assistant Chief of Police is informed on all activities and incidents on campus. Assist the Emergency Management Coordinator with conducting all emergency drills and trainings in all campus buildings. Manage patrol shift to ensure incident reports are completed. Supervise shifts in absence of shift supervisor. Coordinate security and law enforcement personnel for special events. Oversee and assist with all investigations, crimes scenes, warrants and arrests. Perform administrative duties to include but not limited to employee evaluations, disciplinary actions, roll call and monthly reports. Respond to complaints, provide direction to the officers on scene, and evaluate decisions. Coordinate CLERY Act Compliance. Review, approve, and correct daily reports. Disseminate information to officers and staff. Identify and facilitate training for officers. Attend meetings and training. Stay up-to-date on current training trends and case law. Assist with quarter master duties and assign equipment and uniforms to all police department personnel. Act as the evidence custodian ensuring the university police department is in compliance with state law. Conduct outreach presentations at student organizations and orientation sessions. Assist in managing police communication operations and manage communications officers. Serve as the police department liaison for training initiatives, coordinating firearms instruction and providing legal updates on use-of-force policies Conduct Internal Affairs Investigations as directed by Chief of Police or their designee. Uphold confidentiality requirements in all aspects of department operations May be required to perform job related duties other than those specifically delineated in this position Must be available for recall in emergency situations Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field Minimum of 6 yrs in a supervisory, management, or leadership position Possess and maintain Georgia POST certification with no disciplinary actions affecting standing Effective written and oral communication Experience using computer software (ex. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) Must possess a valid state issued driver's license upon hire and maintain throughout the length of employment Must be able to respond to emergency calls within sixty minutes of notification Preferred Qualifications Candidates with the following credentials and experience are strongly preferred: Field Training Officer (FTO) Certification Georgia P.O.S.T. General Instructor Certification Georgia P.O.S.T. Firearms Instructor Certification ALERRT and Active Shooter Training Experience in Criminal Investigations K-9 Handler Experience Proposed Salary The starting salary for this position is $60,000.00 annually. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge of federal and state laws, including criminal, traffic, and search and seizure laws, as well as university and departmental policies and procedures. Knowledge of modern law enforcement administration, including organizational management, budgeting, and program planning and implementation. Knowledge of supervision and personnel management principles, including training, mentoring, and discipline. Knowledge of traffic investigation techniques and procedures. Knowledge of campus layout, facilities, and surrounding areas. Knowledge of first aid and CPR practices. Knowledge of court systems and judicial processes. Skill in operating police vehicles, firearms, emergency equipment, and specialized law enforcement tools. Skill in interviewing and interrogation techniques. Skill in safely restraining individuals. Ability to meet Georgia POST certification and training requirements. Ability to analyze situations and make sound, timely decisions under pressure. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, carrying equipment, and assisting in rescue situations. Ability to use computers and standard office software.
