OUR MISSION
Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system, in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this mission by working with local, regional, state and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain projects that will reduce the probability and risk of flooding for the residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.
OVERVIEW OF THIS POSITION
The incumbent in this position provides a full range of police services for the East Jefferson Levee District by enforcing federal, state, and local laws through active mobile and/or foot patrols. The Police Sergeant supervises police officers on his assigned watch. Supervision is from a police official of a higher level, i.e., Police Lieutenant, and/or Police Captain. The East Jefferson Levee District jurisdictional area falls under the umbrella of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) and includes Jefferson Parish, New Orleans and St. Bernard parishes on the East Bank. •Agency preferred qualification: The incumbent in this position is required to be POST certified•Minimum Qualifications Three years of law enforcement experience.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience. The maximum substitution allowed is 60 semester hours which substitutes for two years of experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license. Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required. An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted. Job Duties and Other Information Job Duties:
Protects life and property, with an emphasis on law enforcement, crime prevention, crime and accident investigation and arranging emergency services. Incumbents patrol an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle to detect and prevent crime. Responds to complaints/requests for law enforcement assistance. Investigates disturbances, suspicious activities, and crimes. Intervenes in situations, using force if necessary to restore order, to prevent interference with normal operations or to protect life and property. Empowered to make arrests if necessary. Interviews witnesses; identifies, collects and preserves evidence. Transports offenders to Central Lockup or turns them over to the appropriate authority. Completes all related reports regarding incidents As requested, aids other law enforcement entities, including the Jefferson Parish Sheriff s Department, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the FBI, the Secret Service, the DEA, the US Coast Guard, the US Customs Department, and the Department of immigration and Naturalization. When requested, assists other law enforcement departments in detaining aircraft arriving at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport. Escorts SLFPA-E staff, trucks and equipment to other parishes requiring assistance with flood protection or levee repair/reinforcement. Provides security for SLFPA-E's emergency repair/maintenance and repair crews during hurricane or other events that could lead to flooding. Ensures that only authorized individuals have access to such areas

NOTE:
The East Jefferson Levee District is an emergency-oriented agency. Part of the mission is to protect the residents of East Jefferson Parish from tidal surge, wind-driven water and river flooding. In emergencies during Mississippi River flooding and Hurricane Tropical Storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if so required, remaining on duty in such situations until released from duty by the Appointing Authority.
