April 2026Responsibilities:
The Sergeant serves under the general supervision of the Deputy Chief and is tasked with managing the daily operations of their respective shifts. The Sergeant will supervise and oversee the sworn Campus Police Officers and non-sworn Public Safety Officers assigned to their shift and participate in the management of the Department, ensuring that the college community and its facilities are safe and secure The Sergeant will manage the patrol operations of their shift to ensure a safe and secure campus environment The Sergeant will enforce departmental orders, applicable state laws, and ensure compliance with all personnel, sworn & non-sworn. The Sergeant will conduct a shift change roll call to ensure all staff are properly informed and aware of ongoing incidents, recent crime trends, new policies and procedures, and any other relevant information The Sergeant will approve all incident reports forwarded to them at the conclusion of their shift and ensure that there are no spelling or grammatical errors, that the information contained in the report is accurate, and then forward the report as necessary through the Chain of Command The Sergeant will be able to successfully address a broad range of issues using sound judgement and discretion, ensuring effective crisis management and conflict resolution The Sergeant may be required to respond to active and ongoing incidents to provide clarity and direction for the staff they oversee The Sergeant will serve as a positive role model and mentor to both subordinates and peers, which will foster a culture of professionalism and ethical behavior The Sergeant at times must respond safely and rapidly to emergency calls for police service such as reports of crimes in progress; suspected criminal activity; medical emergencies; environmental emergencies; fires, fire alarms; motion and intrusion alarms; and accidents, etc. Render aid and assistance to victims, advising them of available services, and making appropriate referrals to available resources Conduct thorough initial investigations of incidents and follow up investigations assigned Regularly prepare incident and accident reports for supervisory review and possible dissemination Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy Perform other duties as assigned by the Deputy Chief The Sergeant is a first-line supervisor within the Department of Public Safety and can have a significant impact on their subordinates and peers as well as theRCC Community Requirements:
Qualifications:
The candidate must be authorized to work in the United States The candidate must be at least 21 years of age The candidate must have an active Massachusetts Driver's License The candidate must have an active License to carry firearms (LTC non-restricted) The candidate must possess an associate degree or bachelor's degree (preferably in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement) For a candidate to be sworn law enforcement, they must have completed an MPTC Recruit Officer Course from an MPTC approved or authorized academy or obtained a permanent exemption from the MPTC For a candidate to be sworn law enforcement, they must be eligible or currently hold a certification for the Massachusetts Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) and remain a Certified Officer for the duration of their employment For a candidate to be sworn law enforcement, they must be eligible for appointment as Special State Police Officer in accordance with M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63 and able to maintain their eligibility for the duration of their employment Knowledge of police practices and investigative procedures of a comprehensive campus law enforcement program Knowledge of and ability to interpret, apply, and make decisions in accordance with pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations Operate specialized law enforcement equipment including specialized police vehicles, radios, and video systems Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and furthering a welcoming work environment Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; and respond well to questions Candidates should hold themselves and their peers to a high ethical standard and be capable of enforcing policies, procedures, and laws accordingly Candidates should have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish effective communication with a diverse population Candidates should have the ability to think critically, often quickly and with limited information, to make difficult and impactful decisions Candidates should have a high level of attention to detail The candidate must have at least 5 years of verified law enforcement experience The candidate will be required to pass a comprehensive background investigation, a pre-employment psychological examination, and a pre-employment medical examAdditional Information:
