Beltrami County is creating an eligibility list for two full-time, benefited Deputy Sheriffs to perform intermediate protective service work enforcing laws, investigating criminal activity, serving civil papers, ensuring safety of the public, testifying in court, maintaining records and files, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned supervisor. Preferred hiring salary range is $35.92 to $39.24 per hour with a full range of $35.92 to $45.50 per hour. Placement depends on factors such as qualifications, internal equity, market conditions, and applicable policy guidelines. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience Minimum requirements are: Associate's degree in law enforcement or a related field. OR A substitution of education and work experience may qualify in accordance with Minnesota Rules 6700.0700. AND One year or more of work experience in law enforcement or criminal justice. MN POST Licensed or POST Eligible upon hire - must submit POST eligibility letter prior to background check. US citizenship and no felony convictions. Valid MN driver's license. Essential Functions Protects the lives, rights, privileges, and property of the citizens of Beltrami County. Investigates felony and misdemeanor crimes; processes crime scenes; conducts initial investigations; interviews witnesses and suspects; makes arrests; provides truthful and creditable testimony in court. Patrols all areas of County; conducts traffic enforcement; conducts traffic direction. Responds to emergency and non-emergency dispatched calls; conducts investigations; determines nature of the situation. Drafts and executes search warrants; serves civil process. Attends meetings and training to maintain and upgrade skills. Serves as Field Training Officer. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of law enforcement methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the County; general knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff's Office; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously, firmly and tactfully with the public under stressful situations; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; possession of physical agility and endurance; skill in the use of firearms, chemical agents, weapons of defense and the operation of a motor vehicle; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public. Physical Requirements This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands and fingers in repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to vibration and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and working with explosives; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Supplemental Information Special Requirements First Aid, First Responder, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, and Emergency Vehicle Operations certifications required upon hire. Specialized training may be required for certain assignments. Maintain MN POST License.
