Job Description

The Campus Police Sergeant reports to the Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety and assists with the supervision of law enforcement functions on all VGCC campuses. This position supervises officers, sworn and non-sworn, and prepares schedules to ensure coverage on all campuses. This position is responsible for maintaining security and safety of persons and property on all VGCC campuses and preparing and maintaining reports. Work includes accessing and retrieving data from the Division of Criminal Information Network (DCIN) computer system, evidence control, training for departmental personnel, entering mandated traffic stop reports into the SBI website, and assisting with special assignments. This position reviews records and incident reports prior to the submission to the Chief. This officer serves the college as a sworn law enforcement officer with the legal power of arrest. Supervise officers, sworn and non-sworn, and prepare schedules to ensure coverage on all campuses. Serve the college as a sworn law enforcement officer enforcing all federal, state, and local laws and college regulations, policies, and procedures. Coordinate campus law enforcement functions with the Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety for all campus locations. Assist Chief of Police with coordinating training for Campus Police Officers and non-sworn security officers. Identify potential security and safety hazards on campus. Perform investigations as required. Oversee any action needed to address incidents and/or hazards that require immediate attention with appropriate follow-up. Maintain evidence records and ensure the chain of custody of evidence and proper disposition according to state law and departmental policies and procedures. Prepare and maintain reports as required. Maintain good public relations by assisting others as a source of information and direction. Access and retrieve data from the Division of Criminal Information Network (DCIN) computer system. Assist with key control and issuance of keys on all VGCC campuses. Provide other support and advisement to the Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety as requested Key qualifications for this position include : High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited Basic Law Enforcement Training Program and ability to be certified by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission as a police officer; and minimum age of 21 years old required. Must be DCIN certified or have the ability to obtain certification in a timely manner. Must have three years of law enforcement experience. Must be certified in basic first aid and CPR or have the ability to obtain certification in a timely manner. Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver's License with good driving record. Associate degree in Criminal Justice, previous experience in a campus environment; and supervisory experience preferred. Must have the ability to : Communicate well with students, employees, and the public in a college environment. Work with minimal supervision. Ability to work nights and weekends as needed Develop training and presentations. Maintain accurate records. Use law enforcement equipment. Exercise sound judgment in routine and emergency situations. Communicate well orally and in writing Supervise employees and make decisions. Work as a leader and team member. Must possess : Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. Knowledge of college policies, procedures, and regulations. Knowledge of court procedures. Strong organizational skills. Good computer skills with Outlook, Excel and Word. Knowledge of community policing concepts. Ability to see, hear, and speak is required to communicate with students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Mobility necessary to accomplish assigned task, such as walking the campuses for security surveys. Must be able to physically operate and handle departmental equipment. Dexterity necessary to qualify yearly with all departmental weapons. Must be able to operate campus police vehicles under emergency conditions. Must be able to safely restrain uncooperative individuals for protection of the college community. Lifting, bending, climbing, and running required for emergency situations.
