The ideal candidate will be a strong, team-oriented leader who promotes trust, accountability, and collaboration throughout the department and the community. The preferred candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field, along with at least seven years of law enforcement experience, including a minimum of three years in a supervisory role equivalent to Police Sergeant or higher. Candidates must hold certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and possess a valid North Carolina driver's license. The Police Chief must be able to develop and enforce departmental policies, procedures, and regulations; demonstrate a strong commitment to staff development and positive employee relations; and have experience in recruiting, hiring, and training law enforcement personnel. The successful candidate should also have experience in financial management, budget preparation, and fiscal oversight for a municipal police department. Additional qualifications include the ability to develop and improve records systems and legal documentation to support the proper evaluation, control, and documentation of department operations; work cooperatively with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies; and direct and oversee investigations involving both minor and major crimes.
