Deputy Sheriff (Navigation) - Seasonal 2026 Cayuga County Sheriff's Department (This is a seasonal position for the summer.) Pay Rate:
$35.00 per hour Candidates are required to submit to a drug screening prior to employment.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This seasonal position exists in the County Sheriff's Department and involves responsibility to conduct boat patrol on navigable waters in the county to enforce state navigation laws including investigation of offenses and apprehension of violators. The work is performed under general supervision of the Sheriff or other higher-ranking officer with wide leeway allowed for exercise of independent judgment in carrying out details of the work. Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class. The incumbent does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
(Illustrative only) ▪Operates a powerboat in patrol of selected lakes to enforce state boating regulations including registration, hull identification numbers, moving violations, etc.; ▪Stops boats to check required on-board safety equipment including personal flotation devices, visual distress equipment, fire extinguishers, anchors, whistle, horn, navigation lights, and anchor lights; ▪Checks boaters between ages of 10-16 years old to ensure they possess New York State safety certification to operate a vessel and all boaters for certificates to operate PWC's (Personal Water Craft); ▪Assists in dragging operations in the event of a drowning; or in search and rescues; ▪Aids other law enforcement agencies concerning boating complaints or violations by pursuing the facts and reporting findings; ▪May participate in boating safety talks to school and civic groups and power squadrons emphasizing New York State laws and regulations; ▪Aids the State Conservation Department by observing water conditions while on boat patrol and reports polluting conditions; ▪Aids boaters in distress and may give CPR or First Aid to injured bathers or boaters; ▪Arrests boating violators and/or issues appearance tickets in the event of violations; ▪Regulates boater speed by enforcing State regulations in areas of shore, dock, pier, raft, float, or anchored boat; ▪May issue storm warnings when changing weather conditions dictate; ▪Operates ship-to-shore radio in performance of duties; ▪Terminates voyages, if upon inspection, a hazardous boat condition exists, or the operator is negligent or under influence of drugs; ▪Investigates boating accidents and prepares related reports; ▪Prepares accusatory instruments for courts in support of arrests; ▪May maintain custody of persons following arrest and transport them to court for arraignment; ▪May testify in court and hearings; ▪Prepares a variety of records and reports related to the work.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
▪Working knowledge of modern principles, practices, and techniques of police work; ▪Working knowledge of the New York State Navigation Law, Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, and other applicable laws, regulations, and ordinances; ▪Working knowledge of safe powerboat operation; ▪Ability to operate two-way radios and powerboats; ▪Ability to apply CPR, AED and First Aid; ▪Ability to enforce boating regulations; ▪Physical condition commensurate with demands of the position.Z:
