  • Full-time Job Summary As the Town of Unicoi Police Chief, you will serve as the top law enforcement leader within the community, guiding and managing all police department operations to ensure safety, security, and order.
You will be the chief code enforcement officer tasked with overseeing Town Ordinance Code Enforcement Operations. You will develop strategic initiatives, oversee personnel, and foster strong community relationships. Your leadership will inspire confidence and uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and service. This vital role demands a proactive approach to crime prevention, emergency response, and community engagement to create a safe environment for all residents and visitors. The Police Chief is under the general supervision of the Mayor and/or City Recorder. Duties Provide visionary leadership to police department staff, setting clear goals and expectations to promote excellence in law enforcement. Be in regular communication with the Mayor and City Recorder regarding police operations. Required to attend monthly BMA meetings and give department reports to the community at the meetings. Attend any meetings of Boards appointed to serve on as Chief (i.e
  • 911).
Oversee daily operations including patrols, investigations, traffic control, and emergency response efforts. Supervise the officers under your command. This is to include probationary evaluations and annual reviews of officers/staff with the City Recorder. Develop and implement policies that align with legal standards and community needs while ensuring departmental compliance. Lead criminal investigations by coordinating resources, supervising detectives, and ensuring thorough case management. Foster positive relationships with community members through outreach programs, public meetings, and collaborative initiatives. Responsible for compliance with POST rules on new hires and annual in-service Ensure department personnel are trained in essential skills including CPR, first aid, conflict management, animal handling, immigration law enforcement, and security protocols. Coordinate with other Unicoi County First Responders and pertinent stakeholders. Promote a culture of accountability by reviewing reports, conducting performance evaluations, and addressing disciplinary issues promptly. Stay informed about developments in law enforcement techniques like surveillance technology and loss prevention strategies to enhance department effectiveness. Required Qualifications Proven leadership experience in law enforcement or military service with a strong record of managing teams successfully. Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent. 8 years+ of full-time experience in law enforcement with at least 3 years in a supervisory capacity. Ability to work 8am-5pm M-F, special events occurring outside of that purview, and BMA meetings. Must be a certified law enforcement officer in the State of Tennessee (POST certification). Successful completion of background check, psychological evaluation, and drug screening. Must have working knowledge of TIBRS (Tennessee Incident Base Reporting System) and TITAN (Tennessee Integrated Traffic Analysis Network). Must be familiar with
NCIC/TIES
(National Crime Information Center) and (Tennessee Information Enforcement Systems) policy and procedures. Extensive knowledge of criminal investigation procedures, law enforcement practices, and legal frameworks including immigration law. Demonstrated ability to write detailed reports accurately and efficiently under pressure. Valid Tennessee Driver's License with a clean driving record; ability to operate police vehicles safely in various conditions. The ability to operate equipment such as, but not limited to, firearms, radio and communications equipment, police vehicles, radar, fingerprinting, pepper spray, taser, etc. Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse community groups and stakeholders. Must live in or move to the Town of Unicoi or the area within 15 miles by highway travel of the geographic limits of the Town of Unicoi. Knowledge of Town Ordinances as well as State and Federal Laws Strong problem-solving skills combined with the capacity to handle stressful situations calmly and decisively. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Leadership, or related field. Graduate of a recognized command-level leadership program (e.g., FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, Northwestern School of Police Staff & Command, Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police (TACP) Leadership Program, or equivalent executive-level training). Certifications or training in CPR, first aid, conflict management, surveillance techniques, animal handling, security operations or related.
