Job Description

Deputy Sheriff I An Overview The Alexandria Sheriff's Office is recruiting qualified applicants for a law enforcement career as a Deputy Sheriff I. We are seeking candidates dedicated to serving the community with honor, respect, and courage. You must have unquestioned integrity and a commitment to serve others in this rewarding profession. Applicants for the position of Deputy Sheriff I should possess exceptional flexibility, with a willingness to work both day and night shifts, weekends, and holidays as assigned. We are accepting applications on a continual basis and will notify candidates of the opportunity to attend the first component of our selection process when it is scheduled. Duties and Responsibilities Deputy Sheriffs primarily work in the Office's direct supervision adult Detention Center, which houses approximately 350 adult inmates. Deputies manage inmate living units, handle inmate discipline, respond to inmate requests, supervise inmates' day-to-day activities, and resolve various problems. Other responsibilities of a Deputy Sheriff outside of the Detention Center include service of court papers, warrant execution, courthouse/courtroom security, prisoner transportation, community engagement, and general law enforcement duties within the City of Alexandria. Work Schedule and Assignment All newly hired Deputy Sheriffs will begin their career working in the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center. Deputies work a 12.5-hour shift of either days or nights. All shifts work approximately 15 days per month, which equals 87.5 hours every two-week pay period. Compensation Entry-level salary for deputies is $61,375.08, plus built-in overtime for Detention Center deputies, averaging more than $6,000 per year. Application Review Schedule This position is advertised on a continuous basis. Applications for this position will be reviewed on a bi-weekly schedule, and qualified applicants will be contacted to begin the hiring process. The Opportunity Deputy Sheriffs work 12.5-hour shifts during daytime or nighttime hours, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays. This is a physically demanding position, and applicants must maintain a satisfactory level of physical fitness. All candidates will undergo a comprehensive medical examination and must be cleared by a physician to perform the essential duties of the role. Flexibility is essential throughout your career as a Deputy Sheriff. At times, you may be required to report to work early or remain on duty beyond your scheduled shift to meet operational needs. Newly hired deputies are initially assigned to the Adult Detention Center, where they supervise both male and female inmates housed for a variety of criminal offenses and lengths of stay. Success in this role requires strong teamwork, effective communication, and sound problem-solving skills. Deputies must be able to adapt quickly to rapidly changing situations and, when necessary, use appropriate physical force to protect inmates, staff, or themselves from injury or harm. Candidates who are currently certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as a Deputy Sheriff, Law Enforcement Officer, or both are highly preferred. Existing DCJS certifications and prior law enforcement experience will be considered when determining the starting salary. Minimum Requirements Must be U.S. citizen Must be 20 years old by the date of application Must possess a high school diploma or GED Must possess a valid driver's license in state of residency Must not have been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the U.S. military Criminal Records/Character Must not have been convicted of or have pleaded guilty or no contest to any of the following: A felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Virginia. Any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, including but not limited to, petit larceny. Any misdemeanor sex offense including but not limited to sexual battery or consensual sexual intercourse with a minor 15 or older. Domestic assault. Must not be the respondent of an active protective order. Must not have committed any undetected crimes of a serious or repetitive nature. Must not have any arrest or pattern of arrests that will degrade public confidence in the Office. Applicants are not required to reveal expunged arrest records, and such cannot be used to disqualify. Traffic Offenses Must not have more than six (6) negative points against the applicant's driver's license at the time of hire. Must not possess a driving record that reflects irresponsible driving behavior. Must not have a conviction for DUI or a DUI-related conviction within two (2) years preceding the date of application. Employment Drug Policy The Alexandria Sheriff's Office maintains the following standards from date of application: No marijuana use from the date of application, regardless of location of use (includes states/countries where usage may be legal). Illegal Drugs (drugs never prescribed for any legitimate medical purpose): No use within three (3) years preceding the date of application. Must not have sold, distributed, or manufactured any illegal drug or controlled substance without legal authorization.
Prescription Drugs/Legally Obtained Substances:
No non-prescribed/unauthorized use from the date of application, including Adderall, Xanax, etc. Must not have sold, distributed, or manufactured any prescription drug without legal authorization.
Anabolic Steroids:
No non-prescribed/unauthorized use from the date of application. Must not have sold, distributed, or manufactured any prescription drugs without legal authorization. Personal Appearance With the exception of a ring tattoo on each hand, must not have any tattoos on the face, hands, or front of neck. Must not have any tattoos or brands, regardless of location, that are offensive, indecent, or unprofessional. Physical Fitness Applicants will be required to complete a physical fitness assessment as part of the hiring process which will include: 1.5 mile run 300 meter sprint push-ups sit-ups vertical jump Some knowledge of, or the ability to acquire some knowledge of the rules, regulations and policies governing the Corrections Center and Office of the Sheriff; some knowledge of the geography of the City and the locations of municipal buildings, or the ability to acquire this knowledge; ability to apply appropriate laws, rules, regulations, and policies to specific situations; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the general public; ability to exercise sound judgment and common sense; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to prepare clear and concise reports; ability to obtain a Motor Vehicle Operator's License; ability to physically perform the required tasks of the position; ability to act quickly, calmly and effectively in stressful situations; and must be emotionally stable.
