Job Description

The purpose of this position is to protect life and property and enforce federal, state, and local laws. Job duties consist of related law enforcement duties. Successful performance contributes to the detection and deterrence of crime and to the protection of life and property. FLSA status is Non-Exempt. This is an entry-level position with educational and growth requirements for candidates that do currently possess an APOSTC certification. Incumbents are originally assigned to Patrol. Incumbents may be assigned to the Warrant or Community/School Relations Unit after the required time in service.

The following duties are normal for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Specific duties listed may not be required for all positions in this classification, but are determined by the normal requirements for this particular position.
LAW ENFORCEMENT DUTIES
(55%) P atrols the city to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations. P atrols city hall and schools to detect and deter criminal activity. R esponds to calls for service, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing person searches, public service duties, stranded motorists, and others. A pprehends, arrests, and processes offenders, including fugitives. C onducts preliminary traffic and criminal investigations, including interviewing victims, complainants, and witnesses, gathering information and evidence, and securing crime scenes. P rovides assistance and backup support to other officers and emergency service providers as necessary. T estifies in judicial proceedings as necessary. S erves warrants. T ransports prisoners.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
(20%) C ompletes all required reports and forms. I nspects and maintains assigned patrol car, uniform, and equipment.
GENERAL ASSISTANCE DUTIES
(15%) A ssists motorists. P rovides escorts. P rovides traffic direction as needed for events such as parades, funerals, events, and school crossings. A nswers inquiries from the public. A ssists with community/school functions.
OTHER RELATED DUTIES
(10%) M ay serve on special teams, task forces or boards. A ttends daily shift meetings. P rovides training to department and other personnel in any areas of certification. P erforms other duties as needed or assigned. T his is an entry-level position. Candidates must meet all minimum requirements set forth by departmental qualifications and the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission to be considered for this position. H igh school diploma or GED (from an accredited institution) required AND ; A CT WorkKeys Assessment (BAT) required (see below) OR an Associates or higher degree from an accredited SACS college/university (attach either to application). M ust have and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license. M ust be certified as required by the Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission. J ob duties require the use of specialized law enforcement equipment. J ob duties require the ability to deal with and relate to people beyond giving and receiving instructions. J ob duties require the ability to talk, express, or exchange ideas by means of spoken words and/or hear and perceive the nature of sounds by ear. J ob candidates must be able to adapt to and perform under moderate stress. J ob duties require regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.

City of Prattville employees are required to obtain knowledge of the City of Prattville Policies and Procedures, and knowledge of their specific department rules, policies, and procedures. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
M ust provide proof of your legal right to work in the United States. M ust meet citizenship requirements of the Alabama Police Officers Standards and Training Commission. M ust live within a 45-mile radius of the Police Department Administrative Office. M ust be able to lift at least 100 pounds repeatedly. M ust serve a minimum of two (2) years with the Prattville Police Department upon graduation from the Police Academy (36-21-7). W illing to work overtime. W illing to cooperate with the workload of the department. W illing to attend continuing education courses. W illing to travel. W illing to comply with City of Prattville rules and regulations. M ust submit to drug screenings for this safety sensitive position. M ust accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.
