Job Description

Under general direction, provides for the processing, security, transportation, health, safety and feeding of prisoners; supervises and works with employees engaged in routine maintenance of police facility; receives, tags, stores and releases property; processes and files criminal complaints; writes miscellaneous reports; maintains miscellaneous records. The Police Service Officer is a non-sworn, unarmed position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Receives and books prisoners; assists police officers with the searching of prisoners; finger-prints, photographs and conducts other identification process of prisoners; maintains records of bookings and trustee work schedule; supervises trustees and community workers; checks with other agencies to determine whether prisoners have outstanding warrants. Prepares and serves meals; inspects jail facility for proper security, cleanliness and maintenance; makes security checks on prisoners; processes prisoners for release; accepts and processes cash and warrant bail money. Transports prisoners to and from court and police facilities; transfers prisoners to and from jail cells, interview rooms and attorney rooms within jail area; accompanies and maintains custody of prisoners to and from visiting area; receives, records and stores property of prisoners; receives and releases property. Serves as a liaison with personnel of the criminal courts building, District Attorney's and City Attorney's offices and processes and files criminal complaints with the District Attorney's and City Attorney's offices. Testifies in court as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must possess a high school diploma or a GED certificate. Must be 21 years of age and have weight in correct proportion to height.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of recordkeeping, office procedures and practices; understanding of Police Department's functions and policies; ability to follow written and oral instructions; to effectively supervise the activities of prisoners; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, department employees, employees of other agencies, prisoners, and the public; to keep and maintain records and statistics. Bilingual ability is highly desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND CONDITIONS
Work schedule includes shifts, weekends and holidays, and overtime on an as-needed basis. This position is performed mainly indoors but may also include transporting prisoners to and from Court. May be required to work in inclement weather, in damp conditions and in confined spaces. Tasks require frequent and repetitive motions including the ability to stand and/or sit for long periods of time, crouch, bend, crawl, kneel, pull, reach, push and twist. May require lifting materials of 25 pounds or less. Will be responsible for the care and safety of jail prisoners and property. Must complete a 200-hour Corrections Officer Core Course that includes passing a physical test of: A 50-yard sprint within 20 seconds; a 165-lb. dummy drag of 20 feet; walk 75 feet within 30 seconds wearing a 30-lb. air pack or backpack; walk 15 yards, climb up 10 steps and return within 30 seconds.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Prior to appointment, applications must successfully pass a thorough criminal background investigation including a polygraph examination, psychological examination and medical examination. LICENSE Must possess a valid Class C Driver's License Testing Process Written Test - Pass/Fail Oral Interview - 100% of total score •Testing process is subject to change Candidates must pass all examinations to be placed on the eligible list. Possession of minimum qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to the next step in the selection process.
