Job Description

Are you a service-oriented, outstanding candidate with a passion for making a difference in the community? We are hiring and want you to join our team! A Police Recruit is a non-sworn staff member in a training position. Successful candidates are appointed to a temporary position of Police Officer Recruit while attending P.O.S.T certified basic police academy. Staff members are expected to successfully complete all requirements leading to graduation from the police academy and perform related work as assigned. While at the academy, they receive rigorous academic and physical training in many diverse areas of law enforcement. Upon graduation from the academy, a Recruit will be promoted to the position of probationary Police Officer. Newly appointed Police Officers will begin a field training program during which time they will receive on the job training in narcotics, arrest procedures, investigations, report writing and many other related assignments. Upon completion of the field training program, the new staff members will then begin a 12-month probationary period. The probationary period may be extended at the discretion of the Chief of Police. The Written Exam, Physical Agility, and Oral Exam will be held on the weeks of July 13, 2026 and July 20, 2026. A Police Officer Recruit is a non-sworn staff member in a training position. Twenty and one-half (20 1/2) years of age United States Citizen or Naturalized Citizen High School graduate or equivalent Possession of a valid Class C California Driver LicenseThe Hermosa Beach Police Department is a full-service organization committed to high quality service to the residents of Hermosa Beach. Each member of the organization is critical to the fulfillment of the law enforcement mission. The Police Department consists of 38 sworn officers and 30 civilian personnel. In addition to the Patrol Bureau, there are the specialized units of Detectives, Motors, Backgrounds and Training. Selection to specialized assignments is based upon a staff member's knowledge, interest, and ability. The Department offers the 3/12 work schedule for patrol officers and the 4/10 schedule for many of the specialized assignments. The Department is very active in providing advanced officer training to encourage career development. The City sponsors a number of special events throughout the year providing many opportunities for extra detail assignments. The Department enjoys a very good relationship with and the confidence of the residential and business community due to quick response times and efforts to solve problems.
