Hospital Police Officer

$6,335
  • $7568 / month The California Department of State Hospitals (DSH) is hiring Hospital Police Officers (HPOs) to join our Office of Protective Services (OPS), a 24-hour law enforcement agency serving five state hospitals across California.
Our officers provide safety and security for staff, patients, and visitors—while supporting patients with compassion and respect for their mental health needs. This is more than a law enforcement career—it's a chance to serve your community, gain valuable experience, and grow within a respected state agency. What You'll Do Protect staff, patients, and visitors on hospital grounds. Respond to emergencies and provide law enforcement services. Assist the public in nearby communities as needed. Enforce laws and regulations while practicing de-escalation and care for individuals with mental illness.
Minimum Qualifications Age:
21 or older at time of appointment.
Education:
High school diploma, GED, CHSPE, or college degree (AA or higher).
Citizenship:
U.S. citizen or permanent resident (must apply for citizenship).
Driver's License:
Valid California driver's license by appointment date.
Background:
No felony convictions, firearm eligible, must pass a full background check. Hiring Process (8 Steps) Examination

  • Submit a State Application (STD. 678) through CalCareers. Background Investigation
  • Employment, residence, criminal, credit, and fingerprint check. Medical Examination
  • Full physical exam. Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
  • Strength, endurance, and agility assessment. Psychological Evaluation
  • Written test + psychologist interview. Eligible for Hire
  • Once all prior steps are completed. OPS Police Academy
  • Paid training academy for all new officers.
