Job Description

The purpose of this position is to perform patrol functions to ensure for the enforcement of laws and the protection of life and property. This position acts under the supervision of the Sergeants. Written and Oral Exams to be held on August 22nd 2026. Due to anticipated interest, this posting may close after the first 100 completed applications are received. The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Performs patrol functions. Responds to citizen complaints as necessary. Answers calls for law enforcement services including but not limited to domestic disputes, personal assaults, property crimes, and civil disturbances. Interviews participants, suspects and witnesses. May restrain suspects or makes arrests as appropriate. Prepares a wide variety of reports, including police reports, crime reports, traffic violation reports, equipment reports, activity reports, and public service surveys. Responds to citizen complaints and inquiries. Responds to major crime scenes and natural disaster scenes to ensure public safety and control. Conducts or assists in conducting major crime investigations. Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed and adheres to all departmental and Village safety policies. Advises supervisor of hazards and corrective actions. While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members. Performs traffic and parking enforcement duties as needed. Provides radio dispatch assistance as needed. Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions A high school diploma or its equivalent is required for the position. An Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science or a related field or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities is preferred. Valid Illinois driver's license required. Illinois Police Officer Certification required. Physical and Mental Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication Ability to analyze data and information using established criteria, in order to determine consequences and to identify and select alternatives. Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, copy, record and transcribe data and information. Ability to classify, compute, tabulate, and categorize data. Ability to counsel, treat and mediate. Ability to persuade, convince, and train others. Ability to advise and provide interpretation regarding the application of policies, procedures and standards to specific situations. Ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as police reports, crime statistics, criminal complaints, legal documents, statutes, procedures, guidelines and non-routine correspondence. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with crime victims, attorneys, court officials, other law enforcement officials, co-workers, the general public, other Village staff, and immediate supervisor. Mathematical Ability Ability to calculate percentages, fractions, decimals, volumes, ratios, present values and spatial relationships. Ability to interpret basic descriptive statistical reports. Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability Ability to use functional reasoning in performing influence functions such as supervising, managing, leading, teaching, directing and controlling. Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in critical and/or unexpected situations involving moderate risk to the organization. Physical Requirements Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring complex and rapid adjustments, such as squad cars, weapons, and radar gun. Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring skill and training, such as running, self defense, and data entry. Ability to exert moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. Ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds, and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks. Environmental Adaptability Ability to work under often unsafe and uncomfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations, odors, toxic agents, violence, noise, vibrations, wetness, machinery, electrical currents, traffic hazards, disease and/or dust can cause discomfort and where there is a risk of injury.
