The patrol officer job is a uniform position sworn to uphold and enforce all laws and Park ordinances, to protect lives and property, and maintain peace and order in the community, including but not limited to, patrolling assigned areas in squad car, on foot, bicycle, to control traffic, prevent crime or disturbance of the peace, and arrest violators.
The officer will:
familiarize self with Parks and trails and the areas surrounding the parks and persons living in area; note suspicious persons and report to superior officer; report hazards; disperse unruly crowds at public gatherings; render first aid at crashes, and investigate causes and results of traffic crashes; direct traffic around fires, parades and other disruptions; warn and arrest persons violating motor vehicle regulations and safe driving practices, monitor traffic to detect stolen vehicles, provide information and assistance to motorists; conduct preliminary investigations, write and file all facts, records, information involved on appropriate reports for possible use in court, and locate, preserve, and collect evidence of crimes and recovered property; appear in court as witness in traffic and criminal cases; observe buildings and areas to evaluate security needs and to recommend measures to make them less vulnerable to crime, speak to community groups to inform them of crime prevention and security measures; work with neighborhood groups, organizations and individuals to address community concerns and problems to improve the quality of life in our parks.
Specific Responsibilities:
A. Conducts preliminary criminal and traffic investigations; B. Patrols assigned areas, initiates field activity; C. Prepares and submits written reports of investigations and assignments; D. Responds to calls for service referred by Communications personnel; E. Pursues, apprehends, and arrests persons suspected of violating federal, state and local laws and ordinances; F. Responds to on-view situations; G. Attends training; H. Maintains substantive knowledge of and follows all Department policies and procedures, applicable city, state, and federal laws and ordinances; I. Attends training and meetings. J. Collects evidence and property; K. Processes and transports prisoners; L. Testifies in court and other hearings; M. Performs station officer duty N. Performs other duties as assigned. O. Develop problem solving solutions to crime and traffic problems.
XIII. ACCOUNTABILITIES A.
Conducts complete, thorough preliminary investigations in all cases assigned. B. Aggressively patrols assigned beats and initiates appropriate field activity: 1. Conducts criminal and traffic preventative patrol. 2. Conducts periodic premise checks. 3. Notes and takes appropriate action for suspicious persons and vehicles, breaches of the peace, unlawful occurrences, traffic law violations and crashes, hazards to the public health and safety, and any other incidents requiring intervention. 4 Identifies problems in the parks, works with neighborhood groups, organizations, and individuals to solve these problems and address their concerns when identified, to improve the quality of life in the community. C. Prepares and submits written reports completely and concisely in conformance with department policy. D. Promptly responds to calls for service dispatched by Communications personnel. E. Pursues, apprehends, and arrests suspects in a lawful manner. F. Promptly responds to on-view situations requiring police intervention. G. Attends and successfully completes all required training in-service, and firearms training and other classes and seminars. H. Adheres to Department Rules of Conduct, orders, policy, and directives, and applicable city ordinances, state and federal laws in making decisions regarding all actions taken including the use of force and the use of deadly force. I. Promptly attends all training and meetings. J. Collects and preserves evidence and property in conformance with established policies, procedures, and statutes. K. Processes and transports prisoners in conformance with established policies, procedures, and statutes. L. Testifies in court and other hearings in conformance with established policies, procedures, and statutes. M. Quickly and accurately enters information utilizing the mobile date computers, performs other desk duties as required and is able to use a computer for data entry and police reports.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be able to: read and write English; communicate verbally and in writing in English; work without direct supervision; deal firmly and courteously with the public; analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine the proper course of action; react quickly and calmly in an emergency situation; develop interpersonal communications, develop and maintain investigative techniques and firearms proficiency. Must have a working knowledge and/or the ability to access information in criminal and traffic law, and Department policy. Must have a high school diploma or equivalency certificate (GED).
General Requirements:
Must be able to read and write and have good command of the English language. Good oral and written communication. Physical capabilities - lifts 50 pounds, squat, bend and move as necessary for the job. Must be able to perform basic mathematics. Must have basic proficiency of Microsoft Excel and Word. Must possess valid Illinois Driver's License. Must possess professional phone skills and work well with the public. Must present a neat and professional appearance. Responsible to follow policies and procedures outlined in Springfield Park District employee manual. Must live in a 50-mile radius from Bunn Administration building 2500 S 11th Springfield

in the State of Illinois or must be willing to move within that 50-mile radius in the State of Illinois within the first 6 months of acceptance of a position with the Springfield Park District.
