BASIC FUNCTION
The SRO has three main functions: Law enforcement-related educator, advisor, law enforcement officer, and emergency responder. First, as a law enforcement-related educator, the SRO conducts classroom presentations pertaining to law-related topics. Second, the SRO serves as an advisor to students, parents, teachers, and district staff on law enforcement, substance abuse, delinquency, violence, and other law-related topics. The SRO may talk with students, parents, teachers, and staff about their problems and help them find possible solutions. When necessary, the SRO may make referrals to counselors or appropriate social service agencies for additional assistance. Finally, as a law enforcement officer and emergency responder, the SRO will work to secure a safe school environment in which teachers feel safe to teach, and students feel safe to learn.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Providing a visible deterrent to criminal activity at district schools or on school property. Addressing a safe and secure environment on school property by responding to criminal activity and disturbances on school property and at school functions. Investigating crimes that occur within the school or stem from incidents at assigned schools. Assisting in developing and facilitating a crime prevention curriculum within assigned schools. Being a positive role model to the students. Supporting BCS faculty and staff, when requested, and when circumstances necessitate a law enforcement response. Enforce Federal, State, and Local criminal laws and ordinances, and assist school officials in enforcing Board of Education Policies and Administrative Regulations regarding student conduct. Act as a liaison resource to the principal in investigating criminal law violations occurring in the school or on school property. Confer with the principal to develop plans and strategies to prevent and/or minimize dangerous situations on or near the campus, or to involve students in school-related activities. Prepare and complete accurate and thorough reports of crimes, vehicular accidents, and other incidents as necessary. Maintain assigned equipment in proper working condition. Assist other law enforcement officers as needed. Maintain the confidentiality of records and information in accordance with established procedures. Assist injured persons and determine the appropriate action in a timely manner. Attend and conduct parent conferences regarding student criminal or code-of-conduct violations as needed. Participate in campus activities, student organizations, and athletic/extracurricular events as needed. Prepare cases for juvenile court in cooperation with appropriate personnel. Investigate and preserve evidence in cases of vandalism and theft of District property; take photos as necessary. Patrol, answer school alarms, and prepare preliminary break-in, vandalism, and accident reports. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent/ Director of Law Enforcement Services.
KNOWLEDGE OF
Record-keeping techniques. Operation of a computer terminal and data entry techniques. Oral and written communication skills. Research methods and report writing techniques. Laws, rules, and regulations related to assigned activities. Policies and objectives of assigned programs and activities. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. ABILITY TO

Learn, apply and explain policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements, and restrictions. Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines. Work independently with little direction. Meet schedules and timelines. Apply the law as needed in a school setting Stand and walk for extended periods of time Work closely with School Administrators Communicate with Administrators, students, guardians of students and staff to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve school safety issues or conflicts Be a liaison between the School Community and Local First Responders Prepare complete and accurate reports in a timely manner Assist in the development and coordination of district wide risk and threat assessment protocols Work/Attend sporting and other extracurricular events after the school day has ended. Wear a uniform daily with a ballistic vest
QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalent Bachelor's Degree in Law Enforcement or related field preferred Valid Kentucky Driver's License Knowledge of Computer Technology Current Police Officer Professional Standards (POPS) Certified Specialized coursework in law enforcement Minimum physical requirements to perform essential job functions that include: Lifting, running, carrying, bending, and climbing, utilizing manual dexterity, as well as having a full range of mobility. Such additional qualifications as the Superintendent or Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
