Jobs › Longmeadow, MA › Special Police Officer Town of Longmeadow MA Special Police Officer Longmeadow, MA Apply Special Police Officer (5 openings) The Longmeadow Special Police Officer is a part-time, at-will position reserved for retired full-time police officers. The primary role is to provide a visible police presence and exercise law enforcement authority during paid details, such as construction site traffic control, public events, and other assignments at the Police Chief\'s discretion.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities Police Details & Traffic Control:
Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic at construction sites, utility work zones, or public gatherings to ensure the safety of workers and the public.
Security & Crowd Management:
Provide security for special events (e.g., sporting events, festivals,) and private contracts, maintaining public peace and order.
Law Enforcement Authority:
Exercise full police powers, including the power to arrest, only while on an assigned tour of duty.
Emergency Response:
Assist full-time officers during large-scale emergencies or special town functions as directed by the Chief of Police.
Policy Compliance:
Strictly adhere to all department rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures, including Use of Force policies.
Character & Background Requirements Good Moral Character:
Applicants must consistently demonstrate good moral character, integrity, and sound judgment. This includes a history of honesty and ethical behavior both in professional law enforcement and personal conduct.
Comprehensive Background Investigation:
All candidates must successfully pass a thorough background check conducted by the department.
Minimum Requirements & Certifications Experience:
Must be a retired, full-time police officer who served in a Massachusetts municipal, state, or recognized law enforcement agency and retired in good standing.
MPTC Standards:
Completion of a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) approved full-time recruit academy. Successful completion of annual MPTC-mandated in-service training. Annual firearms qualification with a department-approved weapon.
POST Certification:
Must maintain active certification in good standing with the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission.
Medical & Licensing:
Maintain a valid Massachusetts Class \"A\" License to Carry (LTC). Possess a valid Driver\'s License. Pass a medical examination to ensure physical capacity to perform detail duties.
Age Limits:
Similar to full-time officers, eligibility expires upon reaching age 65.
Compensation & Benefits Pay Rate:
Special Police Officers shall be compensated at the applicable detail rate as specified in the current Longmeadow Patrol Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA Article 16). FY26 rate is currently \$76.42 per hour Any work outside of paid details would be paid at \$15.02 per hour
No Benefits:
This is a part-time, as-needed position. Special Police Officers are not eligible for traditional employee benefits, including but not limited to health insurance, paid time off (vacation/sick leave), or pension contributions through this specific role.
Town Liability Coverage:
While actively performing assigned police details or official duties, the officer is covered under the Town?s general liability insurance. This coverage protects the officer against claims arising from actions taken within the scope of their employment.
