Job Description
•We are accepting step to step lateral transfers (please see adjusted pay scale below)• County Patrol Officer 2026 starting rate of pay (less than 12 months experience): $31.42 12-23 months experience as a full-time police officer: $34.80 24-35 months experience as a full-time police officer: $35.48 36-47 months experience as a full-time police officer: $37.25 48-59 months experience as a full-time police officer: $39.12 60-71 months experience as a full-time police officer: $41.07 72 and greater months experience as a full-time police officer: $43.93 The Kent County Sheriff's Office is a multi-faceted, modern police agency with specialized units including vice, detective bureau, school resources, and traffic investigations. Successful candidates will function as part of a highly motivated, team-oriented group of police professionals. Will provide services to the residents of Kent County by enforcing laws and traffic regulations; investigating crime; utilizing crime prevention techniques; and providing general assistance to the public. Will patrol assigned areas to prevent and/or discover the commission of a crime; respond to a variety of situations involving automobile accidents, robberies, medical emergencies, domestic disturbances and other felonies and misdemeanors. Will gather evidence; take statements from parties; obtain witnesses; secure crime scenes; prepare detailed reports; and testify in court.
Please note:
Candidates that are hired into this position must live within 24 miles of the Kent County border within 1 year. •This position is eligible for a referral bonus• Requires Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Certification or must be MCOLES Certifiable. Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with all populations are essential. Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Michigan Driver's License, a good driving record and be free of felony convictions. Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion in meeting emergencies without direct supervision is required. Must be able to render first-aid to injured persons. Desired qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field and demonstrated work experience in law enforcement. Fluency in a second language is beneficial. In order to qualify to become a County Patrol Officer, candidates are subject to detailed personal, work and criminal background investigations and drug testing. The successful candidate must be of sound character and demonstrate a responsible work history.
