Job Description

The City of Lansing's Police Department is excited to announce openings for enthusiastic part-time Police Cadets Contract employee that are interested in joining their professional team. This great opportunity is designed for people interested in learning about, participating and experiencing various aspects of law enforcement and police work. Participants will have the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of a police career, giving them exposure to learn, understand and apply applicable police department rules, regulations, instructions, laws, ordinances, policies, practices and methods all of which are a nice introduction into a police officer profession.
Candidates will possess the following:
Must be available to work a minimum of sixteen (16) to twenty (20) hours per week with a maximum of thirty-two (32) hours per week and be available to work nights, weekends and holidays. High School Diploma or GED Non-traditional high schoolers encouraged to apply (homeschoolers, alternative education etc.) Ages 17-25 years old. (Individuals 16 years of age may apply but MUST be 17 years of age at the time of offer.) Recent college graduate OR currently enrolled in or attending an accredited college/university taking a minimum of 12 semester/18 quarter units toward earning a criminal justice degree, or an associate degree or higher, while maintaining a minimum of 2.0 GPA by age 21. The police cadet may be sent to the Mid-Michigan Police Academy as a Police Officer Recruit Sponsorship upon completion of degree program (based on departmental needs and timing) U.S. Citizenship at time of appointment. Possess a valid Michigan Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record Possess good moral character as determined by a favorable, comprehensive, and extensive background investigation Successfully pass a criminal history record check and comprehensive background investigation Must meet physical and psychological standards as determined through testing, assessment and evaluation Must maintain a program employment status in good standing Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Deal with the public in a respectful and courteous manner. Learn, understand and apply applicable police department rules, regulations, instructions, laws, ordinances, policies, practices, and methods Operates computer to access law enforcement records, enter reports, and compose messages Conducts criminal, non-criminal, and accident investigations Investigates complaints by making inquiries, taking and recording information Participate in crime prevention activities such as neighborhood watch meetings, school and community group presentations and Police Department building tours Maintain records and retrieves information including computer usage Perform other related duties and responsibilities not requiring Police Officer powers Answer phone calls/work at the public police counter Complete all departmental mandated trainings Other duties as assigned
