Job Description
General Definition of Work The Detective II, under intermittent supervision, performs highly complex work with limited decision-making discretion investigating an extensive range of crimes committed on any school property against students, employees, members of the public, and the properties of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Additionally, the CMSPD Detective II will train CMSPD Detective I employees and provide dignitary protection for district executive staff and high-profile visitors. Employee performs both school-based and district-level work to carry-out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Chief of Police. Salary/Status Hourly NC 18/ Full-time, 12 months Reports To Chief of Police Place of Work The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time. Essential Functions Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures Investigate all criminal offenses committed on the property of the Board of Education and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Investigate or lead investigations of all criminal offenses committed against students, staff, and the public while on the property of the Board of Education and CMS Investigate or lead investigations of all criminal allegations of CMS employees Collaborate and partner with all law enforcement agencies, including, but not limited to local police departments, State and Federal law enforcement, and the District Attorney's Office Create and present educational programs to students, staff, and the public on various topics such as social media platform dangers, school safety awareness, and crime prevention Serve as training officer for new CMSPD detectives, providing guidance, case-handling instruction, and operational mentorship to ensure consistent investigative practices across the department Responsible for providing dignitary protection services for district executive staff and other high-profile visitors during CMS functions that necessitate additional security measures Provide active shooter instruction, training, and demonstrations Participate in the education of students and staff on safety awareness and law enforcement topics of interest Provide security for the Board of Education and the CMS meetings/events and district executive staff and personnel as required Safely operate a district fleet vehicle to travel to assigned job sites, ensuring compliance with all traffic laws and company driving policies Maintain the vehicle in clean, orderly, and serviceable condition, promptly reporting any maintenance needs, damage, or safety concerns Perform related work as assigned or required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulatory requirements Thorough knowledge of county and school board policies, procedures, and standards Skilled in investigation and administration Skilled in verbal and written communication Skilled in time management and multitasking Skilled in interpersonal relations with the ability to thrive in a team- or individual-based environment Ability to comprehend and learn the criminal investigative process Ability to implement local, state, and federal laws and procedures into daily operations Ability to respond appropriately to difficult or potentially dangerous situations Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships; work collaboratively within and across departments, external agencies, and the public Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment Ability to maintain confidentiality Education and Experience High school diploma or GED required Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification required Certification in Dignitary Protection Training required Experience and training conducting criminal investigations preferred General Instructor Certification and/or Specialized Instructor Certification preferred Equivalent combination of education and experience Special Requirements Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and ability to provide own transportation to/from work Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings # of Jobs 1.00
