Job Description

Sergeant Job Type:
Full Time Winston-Salem, NC Winston-Salem State University Position Summary:
Conducts appropriate vehicle inspection at the beginning and end of each shift (includes reporting damage; properly maintains and accounts for all vehicle equipment; properly operates basic vehicle equipment (in-car cameras, police radio, emergency lights, and siren and in-car computer/modem.; operates and appropriately uses fire suppression equipment, digital camera, and flares; operates the following equipment safely and effectively and in compliance with policy/law: Firearms, Baton, Handcuffs, OC spray, Body Worn Camera, Hand-held radios, Office computers for word processing and other required software and Mobile Data Terminals.
Essential Functions:
Conducts building vulnerability analyses utilizing Crime Prevention through Environmental Design ( CPTED ) guidelines. Develops and implement detailed action plans to address environmental crime prevention issues. Initiates and plans selective traffic enforcement activities like traffic surveys, checkpoints, and educational programs. Utilizes crime statistics data and reports to determine the action to address identified crime trends. Uses proper questioning techniques to obtain readily available information from witnesses, victims and suspects. Establishes and secures a crime scene. Records facts and prepares reports to document preliminary and follow-up investigations. Diagnoses the offenses based on the information obtained during the investigation and takes appropriate action. Properly execute search and arrest warrants. Testifies in court to provide evidence or act as a witness in traffic and criminal cases or Grand Jury hearings. Develops prosecution summaries with assistance as needed. Complies with student conduct requests and testifies as a witness at student hearings. Follows established procedures for submission of evidence. Provides assistance and emotional support to others, including referral to support agencies. Investigate traffic crashes to determine causes and criminal violations as assigned. Completes all documentation prior to going off-duty using the appropriate forms. Successfully investigate criminal acts. Ability to investigate traffic accidents involving property damage and minor personal injury. Arrests and processes are suspect through the appropriate procedures. Responds to calls, recognizes situations quickly and objectively determine appropriate actions. Demonstrates ability to function as Chemical Analyst while processing a DWI arrest. Identifies suspicious individuals, incidents and vehicles. Administers follow-up case assignments. Analyzes cases to identify trends, assign cases, and develop prevention programs. Monitors and reviews operations to ensure compliance with the law, Departmental directives and University policies. Identifies, investigates, and recommends disciplinary corrective action for serious Internal Affairs investigations. Conducts review of Use of Force incidents.
Requirements:
A minimum of an associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 4 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. Current certification from
NC CJETSC
as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe. A total of 6 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience is preferred. Management will also consider candidates whose education and experience align with the qualifications for Police Supervisor II and Police Supervisor III , as outlined below:
Police Supervisor II:
3 years of experience as a Police Supervisor with the agency. At the discretion of the campus hiring authority, documented service as a sworn law enforcement officer at a substantially equivalent classification (rank) may be accepted for lateral hires from outside agencies. Current certification from
NC CJETSC
as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.
Police Supervisor III :
6 years of experience as a Police Supervisor with the agency. At the discretion of the campus hiring authority, documented service as a sworn law enforcement officer at a substantially equivalent classification (rank) may be accepted for lateral hires from outside agencies. Current certification from
NC CJETSC
as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.
