Job Description

Performs senior-level (highly complex) work. Work involves responding to routine complaints and calls for service, investigating as needed to assist in the protection of the city's residents and property; enforcement of laws and ordinances and following department's policies and procedures applicable to span of control while preserving, protecting, and defending the Constitution of the United States of America. Works under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. You cannot proceed in the process without completing and submitting your personal history statement. A preliminary basic background check will be conducted and you will be notified if selected to continue to the written/physical test. Patrols as assigned, by vehicle, or by foot, to prevent crimes and enforce laws and ordinances, and to protect citizens and property. Directs and escorts traffic, operates traffic radar, issues citations, and investigates traffic accidents. Chases, apprehends, and processes persons suspected of criminal acts. Responds to emergency and routine calls for service and other line tasks as may be assigned. Takes initial criminal investigations reports and complete follow-up as assigned. Collects evidence from crime scenes, maintaining chain of custody. Issues citations, warnings and makes custody arrests. May work in special programs or specialized units as assigned. Keeps records of activities and makes reports concerning crimes, complaints, collisions and investigations. Coordinates prosecution with district and county attorneys as required and make court appearances when required. Shares information and works with other law enforcement agencies as directed and appropriate. When not on duty, may maintain scheduled on-call status for major event response. May be assigned to attend community events in a public relations role. Preserves, protects and defends the Constitution of the United States of America. May participate in recruiting or testing for the hiring process. Other duties may be assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
High School Graduate or its equivalent.
Required Certificate and Licenses:
Valid Class C driver's license from any state. Must be able to obtain a Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire date. Currently a licensed peace officer with TCOLE license. If from out of state, already have obtained a TCOLE license, and be eligible for intermediate certificate upon completion of required courses. Preferred Qualifications Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from an accredited college or university or technical school. Municipal police administration and organization. Departmental rules and regulations, all appropriate criminal laws, including city ordinances and appropriate administrative laws. Observes safety and security procedures. Determines appropriate action beyond guidelines. The use and care of specialized equipment. Including police car, police radio, handgun and other weapons as required, handcuffs, first aid equipment, and any other equipment as required. Mandates and covenants required by department's participation in the various law enforcement information and resource systems. Possess excellent customer service skills and phone etiquette. Skill and ability in required job skills and knowledge with accuracy and thoroughness. Exhibits ability to learn and apply new skills. Keeps abreast of current developments. Requires minimal supervision. Displays willingness to make professional decisions. Exhibits sound and accurate judgment. Supports and explains reasoning for decisions. Includes appropriate people in decision making process. Makes timely decisions. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Understand and execute oral and written instructions and ask questions when instructions are unclear. Establish and maintain professional working relationships, balancing team and individual responsibilities. Meets attendance and punctuality guidelines. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and be able to lift, push, or pull up to and in excess of 100 pounds with or without assistance, if required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Working Environment:
Work may involve an element of danger and requires physical strength and agility at times to apprehend or subdue persons suspected of crimes; job incumbents must have the ability to walk or run rapidly, engage in physical altercations and confrontations, subdue or calm a combative individual and to rescue victims. Job incumbents may be required to work near traffic/accident hazards; near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places; and with explosives and may be occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or air borne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration, insect stings, and temperature extremes; may be exposed to blood and communicable diseases; may encounter hostile or violent individuals; may be subject to verbal and/or physical attack or assault from individuals and/or may be subject to gunfire. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
