Job Description
Utah Valley University seeks a student-centered and dedicated professional to serve as the Deputy Dean of Students. Through the division of Student Affairs, Utah Valley University collaborates to foster a holistic student-centered experience focused on learning and well-being by providing intentional programs and services to promote student success as well as professional and personal development. Our focus is on increasing access to higher education, helping students navigate what is often a complex, intimidating ecosystem, addressing basic needs including food insecurity, housing, and mental health, creating ways for students to find community and connection, and facilitating an environment and experiences which lead to learning. Coordinates and leads special projects in the Dean of Students Office, including, but not limited to, student rights, free speech, student safety education, initiatives and programs, and violence and hazing prevention and awareness. Serves on University committees with or for the Dean of Students to advocate for students and to ensure the Dean of Students' office perspectives are represented. Actively promotes applicable student services, support resources, and policies across the University and campus community. Assists the Dean of Students in the development of policies, procedures, and new initiatives across. Oversees compliance and applicable policies. Serves as the primary policy officer for the Dean of Students office, conducts related policies, free speech policies, death of a student protocols, and student safety intervention protocols. Works closely with other senior administrators to address federal and state compliance issues such as Title IX, the Clery Act, and the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act. Assists in leading the University's behavioral assessment threat team. The Deputy Dean of Students provides case management and training for the team and promotes BAT across campus. Serves as a liaison with General Counsel and Campus Police on issues related to student conduct or BAT. Supervisory support to directors in the absence of the Dean of Students. Direct supervision of the Director for Student Rights & Accountability and Ombuds. Effectively manages budgets and complies with the State of Utah fiscal policies. Assists the Dean of Students with accountability by providing support for assessment, program evaluation, annual reports, and policy research. Graduation from an accredited institution with a master's degree in Business or Public Administration and 2 years of related experience, OR a bachelor's degree and 4 years of related experience, or any combination of education and experience directly related to the summary of duties totaling 8 years.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree required in student development, higher education administration, public administration, educational psychology, or a related field with 4+ years of professional (post-graduate) experience working in and leading student affairs programs at a regionally accredited institution of higher education. Knowledge Federal and state compliance issues such as Title IX, Clery Act, Drug Free Schools and Communities. Restorative practices in the context of student accountability systems. Student conduct hearings. Understanding of best practices as it relates to Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment on University Campuses. Skills Excellent written communication skills. Excellent research skills. Understanding of mediation practices. Excellent interpersonal skills. Strong problem-solving skills. Abilities Ability to work with an expansive student body population. Demonstrated experience working with systems of student accountability. Experience initiating, managing, and assessing programs. Ability to diplomatically handle difficult or urgent matters confidently and proficiently.
