Job Description

Salary is commensurate with experience. For out-of-state applicants, possess a valid state law enforcement certification or have relinquished certification within two years preceding the date of hire. Must have completed one consecutive year of sworn service upon completion of a field training program. Must have left former agency in good standing to be considered. High school diploma or GED; must be a US citizen; successful applicants must pass a physical agility test, possess or be eligible for a Virginia driver's license with no more than six demerit points in the past twelve months; binocular vision of 20/25 corrected; weight in proportion to height; no conviction of felonies and/or habitual misdemeanors; no conviction of, or guilty plea or no contest pleas to any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, including petit larceny; any misdemeanor sex offense; or any domestic assault. Must pass an extensive background investigation which includes a polygraph, psychological, medical and drug screening. Per the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice (DCJS), any out-of-state applicant applying to work at any Virginia Police Agency must apply for a DCJS waiver. Our department will work with you to submit the appropriate paperwork. Pre-certified officers who receive a DCJS waiver will attend an abbreviated 12-week academy and will receive a full field training experience to maximize assimilation and familiarization, emphasizing Chesterfield County Police Department philosophy, policies, and procedures. Pre-certified officers who are denied a DCJS waiver will have the option to attend a full basic academy in lieu of disqualification of employment. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. This position is considered Critical Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug testing and alcohol testing. The use of illegal drugs, and/or the use of medical marijuana for this position is prohibited. Employees must not consume or be under the influence of alcohol while on duty, on work premises, or operating agency equipment. This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy" and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check. Operate an assigned patrol vehicle; patrol assigned areas of the county for traffic and criminal violations; respond to citizen calls, complaints, and requests for information; conduct victim, witness and suspect interviews; prepare detailed police reports; make arrests; testify in court; interact with community groups and organizations; perform other police patrol operations in the field as assigned and needed.
PLEASE NOTE
Once your application has been submitted and processed, you will be contacted by the Police Personnel Division. If you have not heard anything within one week, please call the Chesterfield County Police Personnel Division at 804-748-1547. Eligible candidates who are selected for employment will, at the very least, receive an annual salary commensurate with the salary earned by an incumbent Chesterfield County police officer with equivalent years of service through association with a historical Chesterfield Basic Police Academy Class - this will provide their step placement on the department's step-based Public Safety Pay Plan (PSPP). Additionally, candidates will be eligible to be compensated for their past personal and professional development to include: educational attainment, experience, training, assignments, and other accomplishments.
