Job Description

Please include a coverletter Position Objectives The Williston Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. The Williston Police Department serves a community comprised of over 10,000 residents and is committed to the delivery of high-quality services designed to maximize the community's quality of life. Williston is the fastest growing town in Vermont. The Town of Williston is home to several of Vermont's larger box stores such as Walmart, Home Depot, Best Buy, and Dick's Sporting Goods just to name a few and is considered to having the second largest retail base in Vermont. In addition, the Town has a high volume of business employers with the one of the largest being the federal government with their vast amount of office space that they occupy. In October 2017, the Town of Williston hired an experienced Chief of Police. His vision is to develop a department that is community oriented and focused on providing services in a fair and impartial manner. The Williston Police Department is comprised of 17 sworn officers, 4 civilian support staff, and is home to a community justice center supported by a Town appointed community justice board. The police department prides itself on its ability to provide high quality equipment to staff members, a facility that is only 12 years old, and its commitment to support employee accomplishments. The department provides 24-hour police protection. We offer competitive salary and benefits. It is our goal to send a new officer to the next police academy if a Vermont certified officer is not recruited. Although we do not require a college degree, we would prefer candidates that have obtained a higher education degree or have previous military or law enforcement experience. Associate's degree or higher preferred Must possess, and maintain, a valid motor Vehicle Operator's License Must be at least 20 years of age to apply and 21 years of age by hire date Must successfully complete (or have completed) the Vermont Police Academy Basic Class, or instruction as required by the VCJTC for out-of-state certified officers Desirable Training and Experience; Candidates who are currently Vermont certified as full- time police officers Candidates who have previous full-t i me law enforcement experience Candidates who have Military Experience Candidates who have worked hard to broaden their educational background Physical Requirements;
Physical Fitness, Strength, and Endurance :
Ability to engage in physically demanding tasks such as running, climbing, jumping, and restraining individuals. Must have ability for prolonged periods of standing, walking, or running while patrolling assigned areas, pursuing suspects on foot, or responding to emergencies. Must be capable of exerting physical force to overcome resistance and possess the stamina to sustain physical activity for extended periods. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
Visual Acuity :
Must have excellent visual acuity, color vision, and depth perception to accurately perceive and identify individuals, objects, and potential threats in different lighting conditions and environments. Must be able to read documentation and view screens and other devices for prolonged periods of time.
Hearing Ability :
Must have good hearing to effectively communicate with the public, colleagues, and witnesses. The ability to perceive and interpret verbal commands, radio communications, and other auditory cues is crucial for the safety of others and self.
Manual Dexterity :
Must have precise control and coordination of hands, fingers, and arms to ensure proper handling and operation of various equipment, including firearms, handcuffs, radios, and other tools. Must also have finger dexterity to type and grip to operate vehicles.
Overall Health :
Officers shall be free from any physical conditions that could impede their ability to perform the essential functions of the job. This includes but is not limited to cardiovascular fitness, respiratory capacity, and freedom from debilitating diseases or conditions that may compromise their ability to carry out their duties safely. Wear Personal Protective Equipment :
Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as body armor, helmets, and safety gear to protect themselves in hazardous situations. •
Mental Ability:
Must possess constant mental faculties to maintain concentration, think clearly, and always make appropriate decisions, including high-stress situations.
Agility and Coordination:
Must be able to effectively navigate various environments, including uneven terrain, confined spaces, or obstacles during foot pursuits or emergency responses.
