Job Description

Sworn Law Enforcement position which involves the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, reducing the fear of crime, enforcement of laws, investigation of crimes, traffic accidents and other police related matters, apprehension of those who violate laws, maintain order and provide assistance and needed services to the public.
Note:
Candidates to start immediately upon passing pre-employment background and testing with an anticipated official start date September 2026. Candidates that are certified or certifiable as a police officer are preferred. Lateral transfer candidates are encouraged to apply. Lateral transfer based on years of experience, education and additional skills to determine rate of pay and vacation eligibility with approval of the Chief of Police and Police and Fire Commission. Eligibility list will be established.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Patrol an assigned sector of the City on foot or by conveyance assigned. Enforce traffic laws, issue citations, warnings or other action concerning violations. Direct traffic. Investigate traffic accidents and road obstructions. Report conditions of streets, signs, curbs, sidewalks, obstructions of signs, signals or vision. Take appropriate action on matters affecting public safety. Employ problem-solving strategies and behaviors. Provide assistance to meet the needs of the community. Investigate wanted / missing persons and property. Investigate crimes and citizen complaints. Search for and preserve evidence. Search for and apprehend violators. Transport persons in custody. Conduct interviews and interrogations. Prepare reports. Prepare cases for prosecutors and present testimony. Serve warrants and legal documents. Conduct security checks. Represent the Department at various public functions as assigned. Assist co-workers in their duties, particularly during absences. Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Proficiency in the use and maintenance of all Department equipment. Practice principles and procedures of modern policing. Understand and apply Department rules, regulations, policies, directives, procedures and job descriptions. Understand and apply federal, state and local laws pertinent to the delivery of municipal police services. Know the geography of the community. Interact courteously with all levels of supervision.
