Principal/Associate Principal - DSA | MultifamilyA full-service architectural practice based in Del Mar, offering innovative, sustainable design and planning solutions for civic, educational, mixed-use, residential, cultural, and landscape projects.

Position OverviewWe are seeking a seasoned Principal or Associate Principal to lead our Division of the State Architect (DSA) and multifamily project work. This role combines technical leadership, client stewardship, and business development to deliver high-quality multifamily and K-12 projects that meet DSA code and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will mentor design teams, manage complex project delivery from schematic design through construction administration, and grow the practice through strong client relationships and strategic pursuits.

Key ResponsibilitiesLead and oversee DSA-regulated multifamily and K-12 projects from concept through construction administration, ensuring compliance with DSA and applicable building codes.

Provide architectural and technical leadership review drawings, specifications, and submittals to maintain design quality and constructability.

Manage client relationships and act as the primary contact for owners, agencies, contractors, and consultants throughout project phases.

Develop and implement project schedules, budgets, scopes, and risk mitigation strategies to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.

Lead, mentor, and grow interdisciplinary project teams; delegate responsibilities, conduct performance reviews, and foster a collaborative studio culture.

Drive business development efforts including proposal preparation, pursuit strategy, client presentations, and relationship-building to grow the multifamily/DSA practice.

Coordinate with internal and external consultants (structural, MEP, civil, landscape, accessibility specialists) to integrate disciplines and meet DSA submittal requirements.

Ensure adherence to AIA best practices, contract administration, quality assurance, and professional standards throughout project delivery.

Stay current with DSA procedures, code updates, accessibility and seismic requirements, and industry trends to inform design decisions and client guidance.

Represent the firm at DSA meetings, public hearings, and client presentations; negotiate scopes, fees, and contract terms as needed.

QualificationsLicensed Architect in the state of practice (or ability to obtain licensure); NCARB certification preferred; AIA membership a plus.10+ years of architectural experience for Principal level; 7+ years for Associate Principal level, with demonstrated leadership on multifamily and DSA projects.

Proven experience navigating the California DSA approval process and preparing DSA submittals; familiarity with K-12 project requirements highly desirable.

Strong track record in business development, client relationship management, and leading successful pursuit processes.

Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring project teams, coordinating consultants, and managing complex project delivery.

Comprehensive knowledge of building codes, accessibility standards (ADA), seismic design principles, and construction administration.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to present to clients, agencies, and stakeholders.

Experience with production software and BIM workflows (Revit preferred) and an ability to promote efficient design and documentation practices.

Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, prioritize work, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
