Position:
The Deputy District Attorney series reviews cases submitted by law enforcement agencies and determine, subject to the DA's and/or Assistant DA's review, the advisability of pursuing criminal prosecutions. This position performs preliminary Trial attorney work related to pleadings, arraignments, pre-trial agreements and negotiations with defense attorneys. Duties also include preparing and presenting cases for trial or hearing before a judge or jury, including pre-trial motions and responses, jury selection, examinations of witnesses arguments and sentencing. Deputy District Attorneys direct and advise District Attorney Investigators and law enforcement agencies with investigations to gather evidence. This is a multi-level professional classification series in which incumbents may be assigned to any of the four (4) levels depending upon experience, proficiency gained, and the complexity and sensitivity of assigned cases. Additionally, positions within this classification series are flexibly staffed. Progression or advancement to the next level of the series may occur as experience is gained and the incumbent is able to perform with greater independence. Assists law enforcement in preparing search warrants. Prepares subpoenas for witnesses and documentary evidence necessary for trial. Prepares and presents cases for trial or hearing before a judge or jury, including pre-trial motions and responses, jury selection, examination of witnesses, argument and sentencing. Reviews cases set for weekly law and motion calendar and makes determinations regarding setting, disposition and contested motions.       • Equivalent to graduation from a college or university with an appropriate law degree as described above. DDA II
      • In addition to the above, one (1) year of experience as an attorney engaged in the practice of law, preferably in the area of criminal prosecution. DDA III
      • In addition to the above, two (2) additional years of experience (for a total of three (3) years) as an attorney engaged in the practice of law, preferably in the area of criminal prosecution. DDA IV
      • In addition to the above, two (2) additional years of experience (for a total of five (5) years) as an attorney engaged in the practice of law, preferably in the area of criminal prosecution.
      Demonstrated increased ability to prosecute complex and / or high penalty cases with minimum supervision is required for advancement to the level of Deputy District Attorney IV.
      License & Special Requirements:
      Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California Class C Driver License and a satisfactory driving record is required. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Must remain in compliance with all California Bar annual requirements. The department is currently recruiting for multiple vacancies. In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for a Deputy District Attorney
