Job Description
Description We are looking for an accomplished Attorney/Lawyer to join a mission-driven legal team supporting democracy, voting access, and related public-interest priorities in Washington, District of Columbia. This Contract position will play a central role in shaping litigation strategy, advising affiliated organizations on legal matters, and coordinating complex cases across multiple jurisdictions. The attorney will work closely with internal leadership and external partners to advance high-impact legal initiatives while helping ensure alignment with organizational goals and nonpartisan standards. Responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate a portfolio of litigation matters in state and federal courts, including cases where the organization participates as a party or amicus.
- Work with senior legal leadership to shape legal priorities and translate broader advocacy goals into actionable litigation plans.
- Review requests for legal support from affiliated groups and provide guidance on case selection, strategy, and alignment with mission-driven objectives.
- Collaborate with partner organizations, outside counsel, and pro bono firms to develop and execute effective case strategies.
- Represent the organization in coalition meetings, external discussions, and other public-facing legal forums.
- Oversee the tracking, status reporting, and strategic monitoring of active litigation matters across the legal team.
- Create and deliver training materials, practical guidance, and legal resources to support state and local partners involved in litigation-related issues.
- Provide direction and mentorship to attorneys, fellows, or interns contributing to litigation and legal research efforts. Requirements
- Active license to practice law and substantial experience handling civil litigation matters.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex legal cases, including motion practice, briefing, and discovery.
- Strong background in developing litigation strategy and advising clients or organizational stakeholders on legal risk and case direction.
- Experience working with outside counsel, coalition partners, or pro bono legal teams in a collaborative environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present legal analysis clearly to varied audiences.
- Ability to balance strategic legal judgment with mission-focused decision-making in sensitive or high-profile matters.
- Experience supervising or guiding entry-level legal staff, fellows, or interns is preferred.
