Job Description

The City of Port St. Lucie is an equal opportunity employer. Under the general supervision of the Senior Deputy City Attorney or designee, the incumbent will provide legal support to the City Attorney's Office. This internship would provide valuable real-world experience in a government office, and this individual will gain experience in public service. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City. This position is considered an "Essential Position" for the purpose of Emergency Management. Emergency duties will be assigned as needed. This position requires 24 hours a day, 7 days per week availability during City of Port St Lucie emergencies, as determined by City Administrators, Emergency Manager or City Officials. The following duties are illustrative for this position. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Provides legal support to all attorneys and staff of the City Attorney's Office. Performs legal research and writing, attends departmental meetings, assists attorneys with court filings and document preparation. Duties will include working on a variety of assignmentsassistingwith a variety oflegalresearch, policy, and related tasks. Attend public hearings and meetings as assigned. Other duties may be assigned. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at an accredited college or university required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of valid driver's license and maintenance of clean driving record required with the ability to obtain a valid Florida driver's license within 30 days from date of hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Knowledge of business English, spelling and punctuationtoprepare documents, composeletters, etc. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including PowerPoint along with excellent writing skills. Knowledge of office practices and procedures. Knowledge of the Department and City policies,proceduresand practices. Knowledge oflaw,municipal government organization,andlegalservices providedby the City Attorney's Office. Skill in public relations. Skill in the use of taking notesand meeting minutes. Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to organize, file and retrieve volumes of written materials. Ability to distill complex fact patterns and/orconcepts/conclusions of law into relatable and easily understandable prose. Ability toestablishand maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally. Ability to focus on the positive in every situation. Ability to model respect for individuals, teams, and the organization. Ability to stay centered when challenged. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Ability to follow through with assigned tasks.
