Job Description

The Deputy Associate Staff Attorney performs professional legal work providing counsel and representation to the Sheriff's Office, executive leadership, and agency personnel on matters affecting law enforcement operations and local government administration. This position requires the exercise of sound legal judgment, discretion, independent thought, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment involving sensitive and time-critical matters.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide legal advice and counsel to agency leadership, command staff, and employees. Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, memoranda, policies, and other legal documents. Represent the agency in civil, administrative, quasi-criminal, and related proceedings. Coordinate with courts, prosecutors, outside counsel, and other governmental entities. Review and respond to public records requests and provide guidance on applicable laws. Conduct legal research and prepare written legal opinions. Assist with internal investigations, employment matters, disciplinary actions, and risk management issues. Support claims resolution and litigation management. Review, revise, and assist in development of agency policies, procedures, and General Orders. Deliver legal training and presentations to agency personnel. Assist with accreditation standards and compliance matters. Respond to critical incidents and operational matters requiring immediate legal guidance. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school. Active membership in good standing with The Florida Bar. Valid Florida driver license. 0-2 years of legal experience (entry-level candidates encouraged to apply). Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and communication skills. Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality. Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience or coursework in government law, employment law, contracts, litigation, criminal law, administrative law, or public records law. Internship, clerkship, or externship experience with a government agency or law enforcement organization. Courtroom or administrative hearing exposure.
Special Requirements:
Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation. Must successfully pass a polygraph examination and drug test. Must be available for on-call or after-hours assignments when required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws affecting law enforcement operations. Knowledge of civil and criminal procedure. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines. Proficiency in legal drafting, research, and computer applications. Ability to remain professional under pressure.
Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed in a professional office environment with travel to courts, meetings, and operational locations. May involve extended sitting, standing, computer use, and after-hours response as needed.
