Position:
Assistant Jefferson County Attorney Status:
Part-Time (approximately 20 hours/week) in-person
Salary:
$43,000

Schedule:
Flexible, based on workload, court schedule, and emergent matters The Jefferson County Attorney's Office is seeking a motivated and community-minded attorney to serve as a part-time Assistant County Attorney. This position offers a unique opportunity to combine meaningful public service with the flexibility to maintain or build a private civil practice. Under Iowa Court Rules, part-time prosecutors may engage in private civil legal work, making this role particularly well-suited for an attorney interested in establishing a practice in southeast Iowa or affiliating with an existing firm while gaining substantial courtroom experience.
Key Responsibilities may include:
  • Criminal prosecution, including jury trials
  • Providing civil legal advice and representation to county entities, including the Jefferson County Board of Adjustment/Assessor
  • Litigation and general counsel work for county offices and agencies
  • Close collaboration with law enforcement and government partners
  • Professional and empathetic communication with crime victims
  • Effective and collegial negotiation with defense counsel This role offers meaningful, hands-on legal experience with the flexibility to shape responsibilities based on the candidate's interests, experience, and availability.
Qualifications:
  • Licensed to practice law in Iowa, or ability to obtain licensure promptly
  • Strong interest in public service and the criminal justice system
  • Willingness to engage in regular courtroom practice, including jury trials
  • Ability to conduct legal research and draft memoranda on civil government matters
  • Professional judgment, sound communication skills, and resilience in handling challenging subject matter
