Bloomington, IL Join McLean County as a Legal Leader McLean County is seeking an experienced, highly skilled attorney to serve in a senior legal role within the State's Attorney's Office. This position offers the opportunity to lead complex felony prosecutions, supervise attorneys and support staff, and serve as a trusted legal resource to law enforcement agencies, county officials, and justice system partners. This is a high-level professional position ideal for an attorney with significant courtroom experience, strong leadership abilities, and a commitment to public service and the pursuit of justice. Position Overview The Assistant State's Attorney IV performs advanced legal work involving the preparation, litigation, and supervision of complex criminal and civil matters. Responsibilities include managing major felony prosecutions, overseeing portions of the criminal division, mentoring and evaluating staff, coordinating with law enforcement, and representing the County in legal proceedings. Key Responsibilities Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: Lead and prosecute complex felony and major criminal cases from charging through trial and sentencing Screen cases and determine appropriate charges Conduct legal research, prepare motions, briefs, and appellate filings in state and federal courts Manage arraignments, probation hearings, pre-trial and post-trial motions, and sentencing proceedings Administer and present cases to the Grand Jury, including special investigations when appropriate Handle juvenile matters, paternity, and non-support cases Provide legal guidance and training to county law enforcement agencies, civic groups, and staff Supervise and mentor staff attorneys, paralegals, and support staff based on assignment Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and development Participate in staffing and resource decisions within the office Serve as legal counsel to County Board members, officials, and departments in assigned civil matters Prepare and review ordinances, resolutions, contracts, deeds, and other legal documents Represent the County in civil litigation and ordinance enforcement matters Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and justice system partners Assist other divisions within the State's Attorney's Office as needed Qualifications Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school Significant experience preparing and trying prosecution cases before the courts Experience in felony prosecution and/or relevant legal specialization Prior lead, supervisory, or team leadership experience Licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois Licensed to practice before the Illinois Supreme Court Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Extensive knowledge of criminal and civil law principles and procedures Strong courtroom litigation, trial, and appellate experience Thorough understanding of legal research methodologies Excellent written and verbal communication skills Proven leadership and supervisory abilities Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential matters Ability to build strong working relationships with attorneys, law enforcement, county officials, and the public Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and legal document preparation Work Environment Work is primarily performed in an office and courtroom setting with regular interaction with law enforcement personnel, court officials, attorneys, clients, and the public.
