POSITION SUMMARY
The City of South Bend seeks a generalist attorney to join its legal team to serve as primary support for the Fire Department. Responsibility for additional departments or practice areas will be required based on need, as well as attorney experience and developmental interest. Excellent writing and analytical ability, sound academic credentials, and good character and interpersonal skills are all essential for success in this role. The selected individual will interact with a team of City attorneys, leadership, and employees to provide daily legal advice. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Critical competencies include, but are not limited to, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and accountability. The following list represents the types of duties required by this position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected. Draft, negotiate, and review contracts and other legal documents. Research and advise the Fire Department on employee matters including discipline, investigations, employee grievances, administrative leave, and termination matters, ensuring compliance with due process requirements, collective bargaining agreements, and applicable state and federal law. Provide ongoing legal support related to Fire Department Merit Commission matters, including disciplinary hearings and rule revision and interpretation. Advise the Fire Pension Board and assist with legal issues relating to benefits, eligibility determinations, and disability hearings. Research, draft, and advise the Fire Department on policies and statute updates.- Represent the City and/or City boards and commissions in public meetings.

N/AKNOWLEDGE/ABILITY
Ability to draft, negotiate, and review contracts. Ability to work in a collaborative team environment, but with the ability to work independently. Critical competencies include, but are not limited to, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, accountability, and ability to produce quality work product. Transactional, litigation, and/or employee/human relations experience. Experience drafting legal documents for, and participating in, administrative law proceedings. Knowledge of municipal law. Experience with Indiana Open Door Law and Access to Public Records Act.EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS
Juris Doctor Degree from accredited law school. Admitted to the bar and in good standing in the State of Indiana. Minimum of 5 years as a licensed attorney. Good character and interpersonal skills. Excellent writing and analytical ability. Willingness and desire to learn.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
