Federated Rural Electric Insurance Exchange, based in Shawnee, KS, insures the vast majority of rural electric utilities throughout the country. Position details:
  • Oversees a diverse array of claims that are in litigation and determine the best course of action to bring about the most favorable result for our insured member and for the Exchange.
  • Works closely with defense counsel and electric system personnel nationwide to develop defense strategies.
  • Evaluates claim reserves to ensure they are commensurate with liability exposure and expense projections.
  • Coordinates immediate investigations of significant injury/damage events such as contact with electricity, severe vehicle accidents, and wildfires. This responsibility involves retaining defense attorneys and appropriate experts to conduct investigations in anticipation of litigation.
  • Provides legal and technical advice to claims department personnel as well as other departments within the organization.
  • Researches and provides insurance coverage opinions as appropriate.
  • Reports to reinsurers as appropriate.
  • Attends trials, mediations and speaking engagements when needed.
A successful candidate must:
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Be detail-oriented with the ability to manage numerous files and cases.
  • Be resourceful and skilled at problem-solving.
  • Identify issues in complex litigation.
  • Have exceptional writing, communication, and negotiation abilities.
  • Have knowledge of the litigation process.
  • Have the desire to learn electrical concepts and equipment usage. Education and Experience
  • Law degree and an active state bar membership
  • Minimum of 3 years' litigation experience.
