Job Description
Real Estate & Government Claims Attorney West Second Street Associates Flint, MI Job Details Temporary | Part-time | Full-time | Contract $90,000 - $120,000 a year 21 hours ago Qualifications Record keeping Collaborating with government agencies Real estate law Legal memorandum writing Doctor of Law (JD) Analytical thinking Bar Project stakeholder communication Cross-functional communication File organization Full Job Description We are seeking an Attorney to support our in-house legal function across two primary areas: active federal government claims and general commercial real estate matters. The majority of current workload involves disputes with federal agencies arising from our real estate development portfolio, including claims related to construction delays, increased project costs, notice to proceed delays, and space acceptance issues. This person will serve as an operational resource on those claims, managing day-to-day legal work and coordinating with high-level outside counsel who handle federal court representation. A background in commercial real estate law is the realistic entry point for most candidates, and that work will remain a meaningful part of the role. Experience in federal lease disputes or government claims is rare and will be weighted heavily, but candidates with strong real estate litigation or transactional backgrounds who are willing to learn the federal side are encouraged to apply. Duties Manage discovery obligations on active federal claims, including reviewing and organizing large volumes of internal communications, contracts, and project records in response to government document requests. Review and analyze expert reports, including delay analyses and cost impact studies, and assist in building the evidentiary record and supporting documentation needed to substantiate claims positions. Coordinate with and prepare materials for outside federal counsel, including organizing claim packages, compiling relevant project documentation, and ensuring outside counsel has what they need to advance matters at the federal level. Interface with internal project managers, development staff, and relevant stakeholders to gather documentation, identify claim-relevant facts, and ensure consistent recordkeeping across active dispute matters. Draft, review, and negotiate commercial real estate contracts, leases, and purchase agreements in support of ongoing development and acquisition activity. Conduct legal research on federal claims issues, government lease disputes, and applicable real estate law using LexisNexis, Westlaw, and relevant regulatory and case law resources, including the FAR where applicable. Provide targeted legal support on new federal lease development opportunities, including review of lease solicitations and agency requirements, as capacity allows alongside active claims work. Requirements Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school with active licensure to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction. Background in commercial real estate law, including transactional work, lease negotiation, or real estate litigation. Experience with federal government claims, construction disputes, or government contract law is a significant differentiator. Working knowledge of the FAR and its application to real estate leasing is a plus but not required. Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to work through complex factual and legal issues across active dispute files and support claims strategy development. Strong written communication skills, with demonstrated experience drafting legal memoranda, claim narratives, discovery responses, or other substantive legal documents. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple active matters simultaneously, with experience supporting development or acquisition teams in a fast-moving deal environment. Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage large document sets, maintain structured claim files, and keep multiple active matters moving simultaneously in a development-focused environment. Effective communicator who can work across internal teams, engage with outside counsel, and represent the organization's interests clearly in correspondence and negotiations with government agencies and private counterparties.
