In-House Counsel

In-House Counsel (2-5 Years Experience) Timber Systems | Lapeer, MI | Full-Time, On-Site One Attorney. All the Good Problems. Timber Systems is a full-service timber design, engineering, and construction company based in Lapeer, Michigan. We craft beautiful, complex timber structures for commercial projects across the U.S. We're hiring an In-House Counsel to handle everything from contracts and compliance to risk management and certifications. This is a rare opportunity for a 2-5 year attorney who's confident in construction law, thrives on detail, and is ready to own a legal function at a growing company—without the red tape of big corporate legal. What You'll Do Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of construction and vendor contracts Manage risk, support insurance compliance, and enforce contractual protections Oversee FSC, SFI, and similar sustainability certifications, including audit prep Advise on lien rights, project disputes, and claim resolution as needed Support HR and employment law matters (with outside counsel as necessary) Maintain good corporate governance practices and keep things clean on paper

This role will not touch tax or finance-related legal issues. What You'll Need JD and active license to practice law in the state of Michigan 2-5 years of legal experience, ideally including construction law and contract negotiation Strong understanding of construction delivery models, risk allocation, and industry terminology Ability to operate solo—this is a roll-up-your-sleeves legal function Dependable, detail-focused, and comfortable being the legal voice in the room Willingness to work on-site every day in Lapeer, MI (no remote/hybrid) Why Join Timber Systems?
